Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States American Civil Liberties Union of Florida Full time

The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Florida (ACLU of Florida) is in search of a Field Intern to support the Field Department in its mission to safeguard the fundamental rights that are essential to our democracy. This role is situated in Broward County, FL and requires travel for community engagement activities.

The ACLU of Florida, an affiliate of the national ACLU, has dedicated over a century to defending the Bill of Rights. As the largest civil rights organization in the state, it employs various strategies including litigation, advocacy, and public education to uphold a wide array of constitutional values and individual freedoms, such as freedom of expression, racial equity, privacy rights, religious freedom, criminal justice reform, voting rights, reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ rights, disability rights, and immigrant rights.

ORGANIZING STRATEGY

The ACLU of Florida adopts a campaign-oriented approach to its work, focusing on specific advocacy initiatives aimed at achieving measurable outcomes that will enhance civil liberties and civil rights while simultaneously building the long-term influence of the organization and the broader civil liberties movement.

Currently, the organization is concentrating on four key campaigns: voting rights, reproductive justice, free speech, and immigrant rights. These campaigns involve integrated advocacy, which encompasses lobbying, communication strategies, litigation, and grassroots organizing.

The Field team collaborates with residents across Florida to engage decision-makers through direct outreach and organized events. The department is dedicated to identifying and empowering volunteer leaders who can mobilize their networks to amplify the movement's reach and impact.

INTERNSHIP DETAILS

Under the guidance of the Senior Organizer and in partnership with the ACLU-FL organizing team, the Field Intern will assist in all four campaigns by facilitating volunteer engagement and recruitment through team meetings, community events, and college outreach. Responsibilities include:

  • Organizing and executing volunteer training sessions and events.
  • Participating in community outreach to attract new supporters and volunteers.
  • Building and nurturing relationships with ACLU-FL volunteers and activist leaders.
  • Supporting the development of the ACLU of FL College Initiative.
  • Conducting phone and text banking to engage volunteers and voters regarding campaign objectives.
  • Data entry and management using NGPVAN as necessary.
  • Utilizing various tools including Google Suite, Asana, Slack, and Canva for project support.
  • Creating promotional materials and training resources for Field team initiatives.
  • Assisting organizers with community research projects, such as power mapping.
  • Ensuring the voices and leadership of impacted individuals are central to all organizing efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess many of the following attributes:

  • A strong desire to learn and innovate.
  • Experience in managing multiple projects and adapting to changing environments.
  • A proven track record of collaborating effectively with diverse groups.
  • A flexible team player who values shared responsibility and recognition.
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking and facilitation.
  • Fluency in Spanish is advantageous.
  • A steadfast commitment to the mission of the ACLU of FL, with a focus on racial justice and civil rights.
  • Reliable transportation for community event attendance.
  • Residence in the Broward County area.

The internship requires a part-time commitment of no more than 20 hours per week, with compensation set at $15 per hour for those not receiving course credit. Arrangements for work/study or course credit can be made with educational institutions. Interns will be reimbursed for pre-approved travel expenses.
