About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences as a Horticulture Specialist in Horticulture, Agriculture, and Natural Resources. As a key member of our team, you will design, implement, and evaluate extension programming that meets the needs of Wakulla County's diverse population. Your expertise will focus on residential horticulture, Master Gardener Volunteer training, small farms, and inland and coastal natural resources. You will also contribute 5% effort to the 4-H Youth Development program, collaborating with neighboring Franklin and Gulf counties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Designing, delivering, and evaluating educational programs based on Green Industry Best Management Practices (GI-BMP) and Florida Friendly Landscape (FFL) principles to promote sustainability and environmentally sound practices for commercial or residential horticultural enterprises.
  • Recruiting, training, developing, and supporting a group of Master Gardener volunteers to expand program scope.
  • Collaborating with the Northwest District Horticulture Program Implementation Team and Natural Resource Program Implementation Team to plan, teach, and evaluate virtual and face-to-face educational programs to meet clientele needs.
  • Creating strategies for program enhancement, including fee-based events, sponsorships, and grants, and managing all components related to fiscal accountability.
  • Building an advisory committee composed of citizens and professionals to assist with program priorities and design to reach your audience.
  • Developing creative works, such as presentations, posters, and website development, and writing non-technical, people-friendly publications.
  • Promoting educational programs and engaging with the community through various news media outlets, raising awareness of Extension's mission and horticultural expertise.
  • Collaborating with the County Extension Director and District Extension Director on other responsibilities that benefit the total county and district Extension program.

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in horticulture or a related agriculture-related field. A master's degree is required for Extension Agent II or above.
