California, United States RP Full time

Position Overview:

RP is seeking a qualified professional for the role of Solar Electrical Systems Engineer within our Electrical Balance-of-System division. This position offers the flexibility to work remotely or from one of our offices.

As a leading distributor of structural components for large-scale solar initiatives, RP has established itself as a key player in the industry. Our focus is on providing fully-engineered single-axis trackers for solar projects across the nation, particularly those under 100MW. To enhance our service offerings, we are expanding our portfolio to include electrical components such as low and medium voltage cables, grounding materials, conduits, and various accessories. We are in search of a seasoned engineering expert with a background in solar photovoltaic design and power engineering to support our sales efforts and deliver outstanding design-supply solutions for our clients. Ideal candidates will possess a robust foundation in solar engineering and experience in leading project tasks.

The successful candidate will be a meticulous engineer who can leverage their design expertise to enhance the procurement experience for solar EPCs and developers sourcing electrical products from RP. The emphasis should be on experience within the power sector related to solar engineering, design, and their associated interconnection and distribution systems. Familiarity with battery energy storage and wind power is advantageous. This role presents an excellent opportunity for an engineer with a solid technical background to apply their photovoltaic design skills in a vibrant, customer-centric environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Act as In-House Electrical Design Expert

  • Support the initiation of new projects by evaluating conceptual designs and request for quotation specifications.
  • Stay informed on best practices for low and medium voltage design in ground-mounted utility-scale photovoltaic projects.
  • Facilitate the flow of project information and detailed material lists.
  • Provide engineering product support to customers, service, and sales teams as required.
  • Understand optimal design applications and limitations of standard products while assessing alternative options.
  • Lead the creation of standardized offerings that optimize system performance and cost-effectiveness across common project types.
  • Oversee the integration and scaling of new design tools, including those developed by RPCS vendors.
  • Advise sales, supply chain, and customer success teams on product features, design trends, and pre-assembly options.
  • Collaborate with the RPCS structural design team to enhance value engineering and design efficiency across both structural and electrical scopes.
  • Assist sales and supply chain teams in evaluating the product portfolio to ensure RPCS maintains a premier selection for solar photovoltaic applications and related markets.

Design Support for RPCS Electrical Balance-of-System Sales

  • Serve as the main liaison between RPCS and customer photovoltaic design teams.
  • Act as the primary contact between RPCS and third-party engineering firms.
  • Consult with customers on the applicability of RPCS products to their sites and portfolios, considering lead times, fulfillment, cost efficiency, and compliance with codes.
  • Establish efficient processes for generating electrical take-offs and bills of materials based on customer specifications.
  • Develop and maintain design expertise for specific products requiring application engineering.

Preliminary Electrical Design Support for Client Sites

  • Coordinate with the RPCS structural design team to create preliminary photovoltaic system designs, including array layouts, DC string sizing, equipment configurations, and utility interconnections for ground-mounted photovoltaic projects ranging from 1-200MW, utilizing tools such as AutoCAD and PVFarm.
  • Recommend specifications for solar construction and equipment based on available RPCS product lines.
  • Design low to medium voltage power distribution systems.
  • Generate electrical take-offs and bills of materials based on initial designs.
  • Conduct engineering calculations related to system voltage, conductor sizing, overcurrent protection, utility disconnects, voltage drop, and conduit sizing.
  • Support the production of drawings, including one-line and three-line diagrams, as well as cable and conduit schedules.
  • Perform energy production modeling for solar photovoltaic systems.
  • Assist with cost estimation for projects.
  • Support projects throughout their lifecycle, from initial quoting to fulfillment, delivery, and construction.
  • Engage in discussions with customers to present engineering work.
  • Assist with requests for information based on preliminary design work as needed.
  • Occasional travel to client or project sites may be required.
  • Note: RP will provide design support for product solutions but will not act as the Engineer of Record on photovoltaic projects.

Developing the PV Electrical Design Team Structure

  • As business needs evolve, define additional photovoltaic design roles, establish team structure, and lead recruitment efforts.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience must encompass electrical design for utility-scale solar photovoltaic systems.
  • At least eight years of electrical design experience is preferred.
  • Field engineering or construction experience on utility-scale photovoltaic projects is beneficial.
  • Proficient in the National Electrical Code (NEC) and related standards such as IBC and NFPA 855.
  • Highly skilled in AutoCAD, PVsyst, and Microsoft Excel; familiarity with other industry software like NREL SAM, ForgeSolar, and Helioscope is a plus.
  • Experience in battery energy storage system design or other renewable energy projects is advantageous.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
  • Experience in medium voltage AC collection system design is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of utility practices, industry codes, and standards (NESC, IEEE, PIP, etc.).
  • Able to lead engineering tasks with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience managing full EPC or Design/Build projects from inception to completion.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
