Position Title: Police Assistant I

Salary: $48, $68,120.00 Annually

Classification Overview:

Under supervision, the Police Assistant I performs a range of general and specialized clerical and technical tasks to support the operations of the Police Department. This role involves the collection, recording, transcription, maintenance, editing, and retrieval of confidential law enforcement data within computerized records management systems. The position also includes providing assistance to the public at the Public Counter and via telephone, as well as supporting both sworn and non-sworn functions within the department.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Process police reports in accordance with established protocols, including logging, copying, and maintaining warrants and case files.
  2. Maintain comprehensive records, files, and logs related to criminal histories, warrants, and citations.
  3. Prepare and validate incoming police documentation, ensuring compliance with minimum requirements.
  4. Conduct specialized research to assist law enforcement personnel in accessing necessary information.
  5. Provide customer service to internal and external clients, addressing inquiries and processing requests efficiently.
  6. Draft and manage various correspondence and confidential documents, ensuring accuracy and adherence to departmental standards.
  7. Utilize automated law enforcement information systems to manage data related to stolen vehicles and missing persons.
  8. Review and analyze criminal histories and field interview cards to support investigative efforts.
  9. Coordinate with other divisions to distribute cases for further investigation.
  10. Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with trends in law enforcement records management.

Minimum Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a high school diploma or equivalent, along with two years of relevant clerical support experience, preferably within a criminal justice environment. Candidates must be able to obtain valid NCIC certification and State certification for the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) within six months of hire.

Physical and Work Environment:

This position is primarily office-based, requiring interaction with the public and handling sensitive information. Candidates should be prepared to work under pressure with frequent interruptions and may be required to work evenings or weekends.
