Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Special Education Assistant to join our team at Frederick County Public Schools. As a Special Education Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with special needs to achieve their academic and personal goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist students with special needs in implementing their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
  • Provide support with physical and personal care needs, as directed by certified classroom teachers and/or school administrators
  • Communicate and document student progress to ensure effective support and services
  • Set up and adapt materials, equipment, and assistive devices for student use, as directed
  • Facilitate student progress toward independence and self-advocacy
  • Monitor and assist students during educational and recreational activities
  • Assist with routine physical and/or personal care needs, as directed
  • Monitor and assist students in meeting IEP goals and objectives
  • Carry out emergency action and/or health care plans for designated students
  • Assist students with classroom accessibility and mobility
  • Prioritize work assignments and complete tasks efficiently
  • Demonstrate support for the organization and its goals, and accept constructive criticism
  • Report promptly for work and maintain an acceptable attendance pattern
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of English, spelling, vocabulary, and mathematics
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information
  • Participate in professional development trainings and attend IEP team meetings and staff meetings as directed
  • Assist with administering, scoring, and recording of assessments
  • May participate in crisis intervention techniques and work effectively in a team environment
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written form
  • Working knowledge of English, spelling, vocabulary, and mathematics
  • Willingness to participate in training programs or professional development designed by the principal or central office staff
  • Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Regular and predictable attendance
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate of Arts Degree
  • College level coursework related to child development
  • Previous experience working with children in an educational setting
  • Experience working with students with disabilities
  • Bilingual-Spanish
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language
  • Knowledge of child development and instructional strategies
  • Familiarity with the FCPS policies, goals, and programs
Physical Demands
  • Frequent bending, lifting, walking may be required
  • May require moving wheelchairs, operating lifting devices, and assisting students with self-care needs
  • Assist with physically aggressive behaviors as needed
  • Ability to lift and move a minimum of 50 lbs
