This role is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Salary placement will align with the established salary procedures of the school system.

Role Overview

The Special Education Instructional Support Assistant plays a crucial role in assisting students with special needs, ensuring the effective implementation of their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This position involves providing both physical and personal care support to students as required, all under the guidance of a certified special education teacher. Physical lifting may be necessary based on individual student needs.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Classroom Teacher/Administrator, the Special Education Instructional Support Assistant is responsible for:
  • Assisting students under the direction of certified staff.
  • Documenting and communicating student progress effectively.
  • Preparing and adapting materials and assistive devices for student use.
  • Encouraging student independence and progress.
  • Monitoring and aiding students during both educational and recreational activities.
  • Providing routine physical and personal care support as needed.
  • Supporting students in achieving their IEP goals and objectives.
  • Implementing emergency action and health care plans for designated students.
  • Facilitating classroom accessibility for students.
  • Prioritizing and managing work assignments efficiently.
  • Completing tasks in a timely manner and seeking additional responsibilities as appropriate.
  • Demonstrating commitment to the organization’s goals and accepting constructive feedback.
  • Maintaining punctuality and a consistent attendance record.
  • Exhibiting proficiency in English, spelling, vocabulary, and mathematics.
  • Upholding confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Participating in professional development opportunities.
  • Assisting with the administration and scoring of assessments.
  • Engaging in crisis intervention techniques as necessary.
  • Collaborating effectively within a team environment.
Additional Duties
  • Attending IEP team meetings and staff meetings as required.
  • Providing classroom coverage for teachers during IEP meetings.
  • Offering clerical support for the special education program, including typing, filing, and scheduling.
Other Responsibilities
Performing additional duties as assigned by the Classroom Teacher/Administrator.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Note: A minimum of 48 college credits, an AA degree, or passing the ParaPro Assessment Test is required for Title One Schools.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written forms.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Drive applications.
  • Capability to perform essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is essential.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate of Arts Degree.
  • College coursework related to child development.
  • Experience working with children in educational settings.
  • Experience with students with disabilities.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language.
  • Understanding of child development and instructional strategies.
  • Familiarity with school policies, goals, and programs.
Physical Requirements:
  • Frequent bending, lifting, and walking may be necessary.
  • Ability to assist with moving wheelchairs and operating lifting devices.
  • Capability to assist students with self-care needs.
  • Ability to manage physically aggressive behaviors as needed.
  • Must be able to lift and move a minimum of 50 lbs.
