Position Overview: The Registered Nurse (RN) Staff role at Houston Methodist West Hospital is a licensed nursing professional who operates at a competent to proficient level as per Benner's model of clinical practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver comprehensive nursing care to a diverse array of patients, performing nursing assessments, assisting with examinations and treatments, and maintaining accurate medical records.
  • Provide direct patient care efficiently, addressing the varied and complex needs of patients.
  • Engage in effective communication and collaboration with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team to ensure compassionate, high-quality care and achieve desired treatment outcomes.
  • Exhibit clinical proficiency in delivering care, utilizing technology, administering medications, executing procedures, and managing emergencies, while advocating for patient and family rights.
  • Assume leadership roles with increasing responsibility, including participating in or leading unit governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or mentor to new staff, and contributing to hospital-wide initiatives in collaboration with management.

Team Collaboration:

  • Utilize therapeutic communication techniques, including active listening and education, to build relationships with patients, families, and the healthcare team, facilitating collaboration on care plans.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment by being aware of overall unit acuity, consistently offering assistance, and responding positively to requests for help.
  • Provide education tailored to specific patient populations and unit processes; mentor and coach other staff and students.

Quality and Safety Functions:

  • Adhere to established standards of care related to the nursing process, as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.
  • Modify care for complex patients and coordinate with the interprofessional team based on patient evaluations, ensuring accurate documentation.
  • Enhance quality and safety metrics on the unit scorecard through accountability, reporting near misses, and collaboration with the healthcare team.

Professional Development:

  • Demonstrate self-motivation in managing time effectively, documenting care promptly, and prioritizing daily tasks.
  • Contribute to departmental financial goals by optimizing efficiency and reducing length of stay.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and improvement in patient care and unit operations through evidence-based practices.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or higher from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of two years of experience as a registered nurse in a healthcare setting.
  • Possession of temporary state licensure within the required timeframe and other credentials as specified by the unit.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal, to perform essential job functions effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and colleagues, maintaining a customer service focus.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Travel Requirements: Travel may be required within the Houston Metropolitan area.
