Position Overview

The Navy Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps consists of over 1,000 legal professionals who serve as commissioned officers in the naval service. Our mission is to support the fleet and facilitate the Navy's objectives globally, both on land and at sea. We take pride in our dual roles as Sailors and legal experts.

Core Practice Areas

Our primary areas of legal expertise include:

  • National Security Law: We provide counsel to commanders and operators on a comprehensive range of strategies to fulfill missions, ensuring readiness and the effective use of integrated Naval Power to safeguard the nation and its allies while upholding the rules-based international order.
  • Military Justice: We handle criminal proceedings within the military justice framework, guaranteeing timely, equitable, and transparent processes for all involved, thereby maintaining order and discipline.
  • Administrative Law: We offer legal services, guidance, and advocacy to protect the Navy's vital resources, including personnel, equipment, training areas, and property.
  • Sailor and Family Legal Services: We provide legal advice, representation, and advocacy for Sailors and their families to enhance overall Navy and joint force readiness.

Student Program

The Navy JAG Corps' Student Program (SP) is the most prevalent pathway to becoming a Navy JAG officer. This program allows selected law students to commission in the inactive Navy Reserve while pursuing their legal education. Upon graduation and successful bar admission, participants are appointed as active duty Navy judge advocates, embarking on their professional journey.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Student Program (SP) with the Navy JAG Corps, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a U.S. citizen of good moral character;
  • Be under 42 years of age at the commencement of active duty;
  • Have completed the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) or GRE;
  • Be a law student with at least one year completed at an ABA-accredited institution, or a graduate of such a school who has not yet taken the first available bar exam after graduation. Part-time law students or those in dual degree programs must be within two years of completing all remaining degree requirements;
  • Meet the physical and medical standards for commissioning in the Navy, including participation in annual Physical Readiness Tests.

Application Process

Becoming a judge advocate involves a two-step process. Initially, candidates must apply for a Professional Recommendation through the Navy JAG Website, which includes a structured interview with qualified Naval officers.

If recommended, candidates will proceed to receive a commission as an officer in the U.S. Navy. After passing the bar examination, SP participants will commence active duty and undergo Navy training.

New judge advocates will first attend a five-week Navy Officer Development School (ODS) followed by approximately two months at their permanent duty stations. Subsequently, they will participate in a ten-week Basic Lawyer Course at Naval Justice School (NJS). Upon completion, new judge advocates will return to their assigned duty stations, committing to four years of active service.
