This program offers law students the opportunity to gain practical experience and work on diverse legal issues with the Nation's premier conservation agency. With nearly 200 practicing attorneys in the headquarters office and over 300 attorneys nationwide, the Office of the Solicitor is responsible for the legal work of the DOI. The work done by the Office of the Solicitor affects millions of people, from families visiting national parks to Native American students studying in Indian schools. The Office is responsible for advising agencies on the legal aspects of their mission and participating in complex civil litigation before administrative tribunals or federal courts. This includes resolving appeals under the Freedom of Information Act and overseeing the Department's Ethics Office. As part of the Legal Internship Program, students will have the opportunity to conduct legal research on various environmental and administrative law issues, as well as Indian law issues. They may also draft legal memoranda, briefs, and motions, and assist with discovery in active federal cases. Students may also have the opportunity to participate in conference calls and strategy sessions with other agency counsel and attend hearings and meetings in the Washington, . area. The .
