Augusta, Maine, United States State Forensic Service Full time

STATE FORENSIC SERVICE

Coordinator of Family Court Programs (Psychologist)

The State Forensic Service is in search of a dedicated psychologist to fill the role of Coordinator for Family Court Programs. This position is pivotal in managing a newly established initiative focused on court-mandated parental capacity assessments within child maltreatment scenarios. Responsibilities include executing parental capacity evaluations and handling various administrative tasks, such as supervising contracts with fee-for-service evaluators, orchestrating training sessions for evaluators and other participants in the judicial and child welfare sectors, implementing a peer review and continuous quality enhancement program, and overseeing support personnel. This is a novel role that will significantly shape the implementation of the program, which is currently under development. Compensation ranges from $85-$95 per hour based on experience and qualifications. This role offers the potential for a partial remote work arrangement, with the possibility of a fully remote schedule under exceptional circumstances.

Key Responsibilities

As the Coordinator of Family Court Programs, your duties will include:

  • Conducting court-mandated evaluations of parental capacity, drafting forensic reports that adhere to best practices in forensic psychology, and providing expert testimony in family court proceedings. A limited caseload will be maintained to facilitate administrative responsibilities.
  • Consulting with forensic mental health professionals, judges, attorneys, courts, and other relevant parties on clinical and forensic matters, particularly regarding parental capacity issues.
  • Acting as a subject matter expert in parental capacity assessment and related forensic mental health practices.
  • Developing and promoting quality improvement initiatives for forensic mental health assessments in parental capacity evaluations.
  • Collaborating with the Director to streamline office procedures and evaluator practices for family court assessments.
  • Working effectively within a small team environment, providing coverage for colleagues, and fulfilling additional duties as required.
  • Opportunities to offer clinical supervision and educational training for the University of Maine's Postdoctoral Fellowship in Forensic Psychology are available.

Agency Overview

The State Forensic Service is responsible for overseeing and conducting court-ordered mental health evaluations for both adults and youth, guided by principles of integrity and respect for individuals. The Service operates at the request of the court system, delivering forensic evaluations that are objective, impartial, scientifically grounded, and responsive to the legal matters at hand. Evaluations in criminal court encompass various settings, including inpatient and outpatient environments, and address a range of psycho-legal questions. Family court evaluations are specifically focused on parental capacity in the context of child maltreatment allegations, assisting the court in monitoring family progress towards reunification. The primary functions of the office include providing consultation and ongoing education to various stakeholders. Additionally, the State Forensic Service collaborates with the University of Maine to offer a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Forensic Psychology, aimed at training clinicians in the highest standards of forensic mental health assessment.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology and be eligible for licensure as a psychologist in the State of Maine. Candidates should have a minimum of three (3) years of relevant graduate or postgraduate training and/or experience in conducting forensic mental health evaluations. Those who have completed a postdoctoral fellowship in forensic mental health assessment may be eligible for a waiver of the experience requirement. Preference will be given to candidates who are eligible for or have achieved board certification in forensic psychology.

Preferred candidates will demonstrate the following:

· Clear and concise written communication skills
· Significant experience working with individuals involved in child welfare systems
· Proficiency in effective clinical interviewing, rapport building, and interpersonal skills
· Professionalism and conduct aligned with ethical and specialty guidelines
· Commitment to integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion principles into professional practice

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a letter of interest and CV. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
