At Stony Brook Medicine, the role of the Patient Access Representative encompasses a variety of essential tasks aimed at enhancing the Revenue Cycle, Compliance, and Patient Experience. This position is pivotal in ensuring accurate and efficient operations in Registration, Financial Screening, and Verification, as well as facilitating patient throughput.
Key Responsibilities:
Successful candidates will exhibit exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating a solid understanding of patient care. They will adeptly respond to evolving patient needs, making informed decisions grounded in ethical principles while upholding our high standards of excellence.
The Patient Access Representative assigned to the Emergency Room/Registration Services is an integral member of the Patient Access Services team. Responsibilities include:
- Supporting initiatives to optimize patient throughput and enhance the experience for emergency room visits, admissions, observation, and transfers.
- Conducting high-volume, complex bedside patient registrations.
- Completing pre-arrival and registration processes utilizing various computer systems for inter and intra-facility transfers in line with established workflows.
- Engaging professionally with patients and their families during challenging health situations.
- Collecting necessary patient demographic information and ensuring accurate documentation to support billing and revenue cycle objectives.
- Verifying insurance coverage and determining patient cost share, processing payments at the point of service.
- Providing financial guidance and support to patients regarding their benefit coverage and cost responsibilities.
- Informing self-pay patients about financial assistance options and collecting necessary deposits when applicable.
- Ensuring compliance with regulations by obtaining necessary consents and signatures from patients or their representatives.
- Maintaining required documentation, including copies of identification and insurance information.
- Reviewing registrations for accuracy and completeness, utilizing worklists for follow-up on incomplete registrations.
- Adapting to changes in workflow priorities based on patient census and acuity.
Essential Functions:
This position is classified as essential, meaning that during institutional emergencies (such as staff shortages or inclement weather), employees may be required to remain on-site or report to work to ensure continuity of operations at Stony Brook Medicine.
Qualifications:
Required qualifications include an Associate's Degree and one year of experience in public service, public health, or a similar high-volume, patient/customer-facing environment. Alternatively, candidates may possess two years of combined experience in relevant fields.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with proficiency in computing and multitasking, are essential. Candidates should have experience interacting with patients and families under stress.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is advantageous. Experience in healthcare insurance billing or hospital patient access, as well as familiarity with medical terminology and EMR systems, is preferred. Previous experience in an Emergency Room setting is highly desirable.

Compensation:
The anticipated salary range for this position is $54,175 - $59,814 per year, with additional compensation for location. Stony Brook Medicine offers a comprehensive benefits package, including generous leave and health plans.
