The role of the Confined Space Safety Attendant involves overseeing confined space operations, ensuring fire prevention measures, and maintaining fire protection protocols at designated work sites. This position requires a thorough understanding of the specific hazards associated with confined spaces. The qualifications and general capabilities outlined below reflect the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are essential as per OSHA standards and our organizational requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prioritize the monitoring and protection of entrants during confined space operations.
  • Maintain full attention to duties while confined space entry processes are in progress.
  • Monitor multiple spaces accessible from a single platform.
  • Serve as the external fire watch during hot work operations related to confined space entries.
  • Remain outside the permit space during entry operations unless relieved by another authorized attendant.
  • Understand existing and potential hazards, including exposure modes, symptoms, consequences, and physiological effects.
  • Maintain clear communication with entrants through verbal instructions, signals, or radio.
  • Post permits at or near entry points and accurately track personnel entering or exiting the permit space.
  • Ensure proper ventilation is in place and functioning throughout the entry.
  • Verify that entrants have completed and documented pre-entry meter readings.
  • Confirm that entrants are equipped with all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) as specified on the permit.
  • Conduct non-entry rescues using appropriate rescue devices.
  • Summon emergency services when necessary.
  • Order evacuations of the permit space under specific conditions.
  • Prevent unauthorized access to permit spaces.
  • Notify authorized entrants and supervisors of any unauthorized entries.
  • Assist with shop tasks and other safety responsibilities as required.
  • Participate in foundational technician training as desired.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Competence in operating rescue devices.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and logical reasoning.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Familiarity with safety procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to produce high-quality, organized, and concise work.
  • Capability to manage multiple tasks with urgency to meet operational needs.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and follow management directives.
  • Strong safety orientation with the ability to identify and mitigate hazards.
  • Capacity to perform essential job functions effectively.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED is mandatory.
  • Minimum age of 18 years is required.
  • Experience is not mandatory but is considered advantageous.
  • Relevant certifications such as Confined Space Attendant, Fire Watch, Bottle Watch, or Rope Rescue Technician are beneficial.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • This position requires exposure to shop environments where personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed shoes is mandatory.
  • Typical shop conditions include ambient temperatures, standard lighting, and mechanical equipment.
  • Work may occur in both covered and outdoor settings.
