Agricultural and Natural Resources Program Specialist

West Virginia University Extension Service is in search of a proactive and dedicated professional to spearhead a holistic Extension initiative in the field of agriculture and natural resources (ANR). This role emphasizes agribusiness, consumer horticulture, local food systems, and community development through agritourism.
Key Responsibilities of the ANR Program Specialist
Located in an urban setting, this position will primarily engage with agricultural producers and landowners to enhance their operational efficiency and management practices, ultimately boosting the sustainability and profitability of their agricultural ventures and local food initiatives.
This full-time role carries the academic title of Assistant Professor or Visiting Instructor, contingent upon the educational qualifications of the selected candidate. An Assistant Professor designation requires a graduate-level degree, while a Visiting Instructor designation is available for those with an undergraduate degree.
The Specialist will report directly to the ANR Program Director regarding all programmatic and administrative functions. Additionally, collaboration with the County Program Coordinator is essential to ensure the integration of program efforts within the broader County Extension framework.
Core Functions and Responsibilities
- Design and deliver educational initiatives in designated program areas, facilitating effective understanding and application of science-based information.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive Plan of Work that encompasses a blend of ANR programming, with a focus on agribusiness and agritourism development opportunities.
- Engage with the Extension Service Committee and community stakeholders to assess local conditions, identify key issues, and formulate relevant programs.
- Leverage resources from West Virginia University and local communities to effectively execute county programs.
- Identify, recruit, and cultivate volunteer leadership to support program delivery.
- Establish systems for tracking and reporting program outcomes.
- Maintain a professional educator role at all times.
- Collaborate with Extension work teams to develop regional and statewide programs.
- Support youth agricultural programming in partnership with other county staff.
- Educational Program Development Focus on creating educational programs tailored to non-credit learners' needs.
- Market, deliver, and evaluate educational programming based on local priorities.
- Set clear objectives and utilize appropriate content and learning experiences to achieve these goals.
- Implement diverse program delivery methods to effectively reach target audiences.
- Ensure foundational work is in place for program success.
- Assess program results, measure impact, and report to stakeholders.
- Utilize evaluation outcomes to refine program implementation.
- Community Engagement Cultivate an understanding of community needs and the role of Extension in addressing them.
- Analyze social and economic factors affecting the county.
- Build partnerships to meet community programming needs.
- Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of programs in inducing positive change.
- Research and Development Apply agricultural knowledge to enhance teaching and service delivery.
- Engage in professional development to enhance expertise.
- Utilize current knowledge to address priority issues effectively.
- Evaluate the impact of new knowledge on decision-making processes.
- Understand and apply the philosophy of Extension in program delivery and evaluation.
- Communicate the objectives and policies of WVU Extension Service.
- Identify and secure necessary resources for program implementation.
- Provide training for volunteer leaders to support program execution.
- Maintain effective communication with volunteer leaders and media personnel.

- A completed master's degree in an agricultural-related discipline is essential. Candidates currently pursuing a master's degree may be considered, provided the degree is completed prior to the start date.
- Preferred training and experience in agribusiness and plant science/horticulture.
- Experience in community development is advantageous.
- Demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills with various agencies and organizations.
- Experience in volunteer management and team leadership is desirable.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, along with proficiency in educational technology.
- Experience working with advisory committees and media outlets.
Preferred Experience:
- Successful track record in securing funding for educational initiatives through grants and fundraising.
- Experience in promoting and raising awareness of programs among community leaders.
Special Requirements:
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
- Willingness to travel as required for position-related activities.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
- Physical capability to lift and transport materials for training sessions.
Position Overview:
- This is a full-time, twelve-month Extension faculty position.
- The successful candidate will be evaluated based on contributions to teaching and service, with expectations for ongoing professional development.
- The role will involve providing programming in agriculture and natural resources, as well as community development initiatives.
- Appointment is contingent upon approval from the relevant Extension Service Committee.
