Boeing Defense, Space and Security is looking for an Advanced Optical Systems Engineer in the Puget Sound region to contribute to various space initiatives.

This role offers the chance to collaborate with a skilled, multidisciplinary team to design innovative systems that address complex requirements in dynamic development settings.

This position focuses on space systems architecture, requirements development and management, use case formulation, and verification strategies with an emphasis on software implementation.

We emphasize rapid prototyping to showcase a range of mission-oriented technologies for diverse customers. Our group encompasses all engineering aspects, from technology investment and concept development to proposal writing, requirements and design, building, integration, testing, and demonstrating products in their operational environments.


Key Responsibilities:
Collaborate closely with various engineering disciplines in a cohesive team setting to create system architecture that aligns with CONOPS requirements, particularly for optical communication systems.

Formulate a comprehensive set of ground/space algorithms and use cases based on CONOPS; convert these algorithms into specific requirements for optical communication systems.

Draft optical communication system specifications, algorithm documentation, and software requirements.

Address stakeholder needs through analysis, defining technical performance measures (TPM), requirements analysis, and allocation & definition for subcontractors, utilizing tools such as Cameo, JIRA, and Confluence.

Devise verification plans, including coordination of necessary tests for both space and ground systems.

Create and maintain Interface Control Documents (ICDs) for intricate space and ground architectures.

Propose operational procedures for utilizing optical systems.

Design, analyze, and guide others, including suppliers, in the development of electro-optical systems, simulations, models, tools, and analytical techniques.


Lead and define electro-optical performance requirements, ensuring traceability and quality from system to component level, and resolve requirements challenges across program elements.

Oversee design reviews, analyses, simulations, and component/system testing to guarantee the delivery of products that meet or exceed customer expectations.

Ensure timely and cost-effective solutions for program and engineering challenges, presenting recommendations and implementation status to leadership and clients.

Facilitate, organize, and resolve cross-divisional issues.

Work under consultative supervision, mentoring other engineers and leaders.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the designated location.


This role necessitates the ability to obtain a US Top Secret Security Clearance, which requires US Citizenship as a condition of employment.

A final U.S. Top Secret or TS/SCI Clearance Post-Start is mandatory.

Special Program Access or other Government Access Requirements are essential for this position.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):


Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited program in engineering, engineering technology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.

3+ years of systems engineering experience.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
Systems engineering experience on aerospace platforms or similarly regulated products.

Experience with requirements development, verification, validation, ICDs, risk management, and trade studies.

Experience with hardware/software integration.

Experience with complex optical communication systems.

Experience in the development, construction, and testing of spacecraft or ground systems.

Experience utilizing Model Based Engineering (MBE or MBSE) tools.

Experience working across multiple disciplines in a fast-paced development environment.

Active Top Secret clearance and SSBI investigation highly desired (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active).

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry (e.g.

Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g.

PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Lead (Level 4):
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry (e.g.

Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g.

PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Senior (Level 5):
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry (e.g.

Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g.

PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
