Cost Analysis Specialist

Valmet is on the lookout for talented individuals to nurture into the future leaders of the pulp and paper sector. You will play a crucial role in ensuring we deliver exceptional service to our clients by acting as the bridge between Sales, Engineering, Procurement, Project Management, and Field Services. The Cost Estimator is essential in this process.
As a Cost Estimator at Valmet, your primary responsibilities will include supporting the cost estimation processes for Sales and Engineering initiatives within the Pulp & Wood Handling division for the North American market.
The individual in this role will undertake routine tasks to assist in estimating costs associated with Sales and Engineering efforts at Valmet, under the guidance of the Director of Pulp & Wood Handling.

- Providing preliminary cost estimates based on historical data to support business development efforts aimed at securing bidding opportunities.
- Offering pricing for budget estimates for new project prospects utilizing data from previous projects.
- Developing comprehensive firm cost estimates by:
- Reviewing quantity takeoffs and comparing them to historical data, recommending construction methods.
- Soliciting and evaluating supplier and subcontractor quotations.
- Preparing internal estimates for suppliers and subcontractors' scopes.
- Ensuring compliance of documents with engineering data, scope, and commercial positions.
- Guaranteeing the accuracy of proposal documents and safeguarding the cost estimate.
- Conducting contingency analyses based on available engineering information, supplier and subcontractor pricing, site conditions, labor surveys, and schedule impacts.
- Acting as the primary contact for all pricing issues during the estimate preparation phase of proposal development.
- Coordinating meetings with subcontractors and suppliers (through Supply Management) and internal personnel as necessary during the proposal phase.
- Collaborating with Project Controls to formulate the project cash-flow plan.
- Obtaining necessary approvals for completed estimates in accordance with corporate procedures.
- Preparing project budgets based on finalized estimates and sales prices.
- Creating and maintaining a costing database for proprietary and auxiliary equipment supplied to these market areas.
- Developing and maintaining estimating trend charts to effectively evaluate and manage the Cost Management function, including commodity purchase prices, typical unit cost rates, and project cost breakdowns.
- Establishing and maintaining standard estimating formats.
- Maintaining departmental records in line with corporate guidelines.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should possess at least an associate degree, with a preference for a bachelor's degree (BS/BA). A foundational understanding of the pulp and paper industry and relevant experience is preferred.

The perfect candidate should also demonstrate: a solid understanding of cost estimation procedures, advanced Excel proficiency, project management skills; strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and organizational abilities; leadership qualities; negotiation skills; and industry knowledge. Candidates must be self-driven, capable of working independently with minimal supervision, and adept at managing multiple and shifting priorities.
