Position Overview

The Histology Technician embodies the core mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adhering to the organization's ethical standards and compliance protocols while fulfilling all relevant policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

This role is essential in providing both technical and clinical assistance to various medical professionals by conducting histological laboratory tests that support the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and ongoing care of patients facing diverse health challenges. The Histology Technician serves as a crucial link between physicians and laboratory staff, addressing inquiries and offering educational support.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conducts a variety of laboratory tests, including processing, staining, and preparing slides, as well as applying specialized histological stains.
  2. Monitors inventory and expenses, and prepares documentation for reporting purposes.
  3. Ensures proper preparation, cleaning, and maintenance of laboratory instruments.
  4. Maintains laboratory equipment and prepares the workspace for operations, including the safe disposal of chemicals.
  5. May undertake additional tasks as required.

Qualifications

Essential:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent GED.
  2. Up to two years of experience in a related field.
  3. Prior experience in molecular laboratories, including in situ hybridization and polymerase chain reaction techniques.

Desirable:

  1. One of the following educational qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in biological sciences
  • Associate's degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution
  • Completion of 60 semester hours from an accredited institution, including 24 hours of medical laboratory technology courses
  • 24 semester hours comprising 6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination
HT(ASCP) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology as a Histotechnician, or eligibility to complete it.Experience in immunohistochemistry and tissue processing is preferred.
