Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Electrical Systems Specialist to join our team at the Marine Biological Laboratory. As a key member of our facilities maintenance team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our electrical systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install, test, repair, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures in all MBL buildings.
  • Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
  • Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformer, or other components.
  • Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
  • Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
  • Track costs for cost center allocation.
  • Maintain electrical supplies in a neat and orderly fashion. Notify Supervisor of supply and equipment needs.
  • Work with, and coordinate with, other Plant Operation and Maintenance staff as necessary.
  • Serve as Category I Essential Personnel during emergencies. Expected to be available to prepare for a storm, provide facility protection during the storm, and take the first steps towards restoring normal operations.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts Journeyman Electrician's License and demonstrated skill in the trade.
  • Must have experience working with process control systems including PLCs, loop controls, VFDs, and other system components.
  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to take direction well.
  • Must be computer literate.
Working Conditions

This position requires light work (exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Worker must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, couch, reach, push, pull, use fingertips, grasp, lift, talk, hear, taste/smell, perceive attributes of objects by touch, and perform repetitive motions. Worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach.

This position is subject to inside environmental conditions and outside environmental conditions with no effective protection from weather. Worker is subject to noise, vibration hazards, and atmospheric conditions. Worker is frequently in close quarters and must be able to function in narrow aisles or passageways.
