Position Overview:

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for steering the organization towards its mission, strategic goals, and financial targets while reporting directly to the Board of Directors (BOD). The CEO is tasked with assembling and guiding a proficient management team, overseeing various departments including Land Conservation, Development, Education, Outreach and Engagement, and Operations, with a total of 6 direct reports and 24 staff members.

Key Responsibilities:

Organizational Leadership:

  • Inspire and cultivate a high-performing management team.
  • Implement the Strategic Roadmap for Collaborative Conservation that Benefits Birds, Wildlife, and People.
  • Encourage a community-focused approach to conservation through partnerships with other nonprofits, educational institutions, and community leaders.
  • Promote the organization’s long-term conservation and outreach objectives while upholding our core values of strategy, stewardship, inclusion, collaboration, and excellence.

Financial Oversight and Fundraising:

  • Oversee the development and monitoring of the annual operating budget in collaboration with the Controller and Finance Committee.
  • Ensure robust financial practices, reporting, and audit support, providing monthly updates to the BOD.
  • Lead grant proposal initiatives and major fundraising efforts, including the cultivation of significant individual, foundation, and corporate donors.

Organizational Management and Program Oversight:

  • Manage organizational policies and practices to maintain accreditation, risk management, and personnel compensation.
  • Advance key programs such as land conservation, community outreach, environmental education, and fundraising.
  • Foster a culture of trust, respect, and collaboration across all departments.
  • Guide the development of biennial action plans and conduct annual organizational reviews.

Stakeholder Relations and Communications:

  • Regularly update the Chair of the Board regarding organizational status and collaborate on board meeting agendas.
  • Effectively communicate the organization’s mission and programs to various stakeholders and serve as the primary brand ambassador.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with nonprofit leaders, public and private stakeholders, and community groups.
  • Contribute to strategic marketing efforts and produce articles for organizational publications.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree; advanced degree in a relevant field preferred.
  • Proven commitment to conservation and demonstrated leadership experience in relevant fields.
  • Strong executive leadership skills with a history of developing and retaining top talent.
  • Ability to lead strategically while managing diverse teams within a complex organization.
  • Commitment to advancing equity in organizational practices and program delivery.
  • Experience in land protection initiatives is advantageous.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
