The Pediatric Pulmonology Clinic within the VCU Department of Pediatrics stands as the sole specialty group in Central Virginia focused on the assessment and continuous management of pediatric pulmonary conditions. It is also recognized as the only accredited cystic fibrosis center and sleep laboratory in the area. Our specialists are dedicated to comprehensive clinical evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and ongoing care for pediatric patients suffering from chronic respiratory issues such as asthma and cystic fibrosis.
Unit Mission:
We are committed to fostering partnerships within the community to enhance care, education, and outreach concerning prevalent pulmonary conditions, particularly asthma.
Position Overview:
VCU Health is conducting a national search for a new Chief of the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine. We seek a physician scientist or clinician-educator at the Associate or full Professor level. The successful candidate will lead a division comprising eight physician pulmonologists and sleep medicine specialists. Key responsibilities will encompass mentorship and professional development for division members, the establishment of successful outreach and regional initiatives, the maintenance of a nationally recognized research program, and the promotion of a culture of excellence in both teaching and clinical practice.
The ideal candidate will bring energy, creativity, and vision to lead a distinguished academic division that provides clinical services within a Pediatric Medical Center. Our division is experiencing significant growth and is actively engaged in externally funded research across various domains, including bench, translational, clinical, and epidemiological studies, as well as Quality Improvement initiatives. The Division also features a fellowship program, a high-performing cystic fibrosis center, a community asthma initiative, a sleep program, and collaborates in multidisciplinary efforts related to aerodigestive, chronic ventilation, neuromuscular, and sickle cell programs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teaching: The faculty member will have responsibilities in the realm of Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine, providing guidance and mentorship to medical students, residents, chief residents, and fellows as applicable.
- Research: The faculty member is expected to secure funding from external granting agencies, such as the NIH or equivalent foundations. Development of a scholarly research portfolio demonstrating multidisciplinary applications and external funding is essential to complement and enhance existing departmental expertise.
- Service: The faculty member will participate in departmental or School of Medicine committees as appropriate and contribute professional service through journal reviews, conference presentations, and similar activities.
- Clinical: The faculty member will serve as a leader and role model in Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine within the Department of Pediatrics.
- Administrative: The faculty member will undertake leadership and administrative responsibilities associated with the role of Division Chair.
Required Qualifications:
- MD/DO
- Completion of residency training in Pediatrics
- Completion of fellowship training in Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine
- Eligibility for Virginia medical licensure
- Board certification in Pediatric Pulmonology
- Demonstrated experience in fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level in a related field
- Proven track record of securing external funding
- Administrative experience
- Experience in successfully mentoring junior colleagues and trainees across all facets of the academic mission
