The Ophthalmic Technician plays a crucial role in supporting the Ophthalmologist and other technical staff in conducting essential diagnostic assessments for evaluating patient ocular health, procedures, and vision correction.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts initial screening assessments for physician review, including but not limited to, central and peripheral visual field evaluations; ocular motility assessments; color vision evaluations; pharmacological pupil examinations; tonometry, tomography, and tension tonometry tests to assess intraocular pressure and pupil size, equality, and reaction prior to dilation.
  • Examines the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye utilizing a slit lamp, documenting any deviations from normal findings.
  • Measures patient visual acuity with and without corrective lenses for both distance and near vision; gathers optical and lensometry data to ascertain lens prescriptions and rectify vision issues; records observations in patient charts.
  • Obtains topographical data of the eye, including corneal diameter and curvature; assists the physician in fitting patients with contact lenses and evaluating the fit using a biomicroscope; instructs patients on proper care, insertion, and usage of contact lenses.
  • Collects medical and personal information for patient records; screens patients for conditions beyond ocular examination.
  • Coordinates laboratory and additional tests, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies, and patient admissions and surgeries as directed by the physician; addresses patient and family concerns by clarifying diagnostic procedures and treatment methods.
  • Calibrates and maintains all utilized instruments, including but not limited to bio-microscopes, lensometers, keratometers, tangent screens, slit lamps, and tonometers; cleans and stocks consultation rooms and microbiology labs with necessary supplies.
  • Sterilizes and prepares instruments for ophthalmic surgical procedures.
  • Assists with minor office surgeries, laser treatments, and operating room procedures as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Successful completion of an Ophthalmic Technician training program.
  • Certification as an Ophthalmic Technician in accordance with state or contract requirements.
  • Preferred: One (1) year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician.
  • Adheres to all relevant professional standards of practice.
  • Participation and completion of Amergis' Competency program when applicable.
  • Current CPR certification if applicable.
  • TB Questionnaire, PPD, or chest x-ray if applicable.
  • Current Health certificate as per contract or state regulations.
  • Must comply with all federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to the job site.
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information to and from relevant individuals (including supervisors, co-workers, and clients) through strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required.
  • Computer proficiency is required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Experience:
  • COT Certification.
