SUMMARY OF POSITION

The role involves conducting detailed evaluations of commercial and residential construction plans to ensure structural and non-structural compliance prior to the issuance of building permits. This position is responsible for overseeing construction timelines and ensuring adherence to regulations through periodic inspections. The incumbent will interpret and apply relevant codes and regulations while assessing proposals for new materials and reviewing plan submissions. Engineering analysis of structural designs may also be part of the responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Key responsibilities may vary based on departmental needs. Duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Engaging with architects, engineers, contractors, and the public to address structural, mechanical, and architectural compliance with Building, Fire, Plumbing, Mechanical, Energy, and State adopted codes.
  • Reviewing construction plans and engineering calculations to ensure they meet all applicable codes.
  • Providing code analysis to resolve conflicts related to interpretations of construction codes, and advising building officials and inspectors on potential solutions.
  • Developing and managing schedules for construction projects.
  • Ensuring compliance with code intent through communication with various City departments and personnel, including Planning, Public Works, Engineering, and external agencies.
  • Preparing reports, presentations, and conducting mechanical analyses as required.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Assisting in code interpretation and recommending procedures for conflict resolution.
  • Performing additional duties of a similar nature, including inspecting ongoing work to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience that equips the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job effectively.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or a closely related field.
  • ICC or similar certification as a plans examiner or an equivalent combination of experience.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Certain licenses and certificates may be obtained on the job as agreed upon by the City and employee.
  • Valid Washington State driver license.

Work is primarily conducted in an office environment, with responsibilities that may involve moving construction plans and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.
