The Dry Dock Mechanic is responsible for performing a variety of tasks in accordance with work specifications, safety protocols, and quality standards. This role requires regular attendance on-site and a strong understanding of technical publications and drawings.
Key Responsibilities:- Technical Expertise: Must have the ability to navigate a ship, the Dry Dock, and understand compartment designation. Must have excellent working knowledge and understanding of technical publications and drawings.
- Mechanical Repair and Installation: Must be able to repair and/or install equipment using routine mechanical knowledge in conjunction with technical information and diagrams and ability to make a diagnosis of dry dock machinery and mechanical equipment to determine problems and make proper repairs.
- Measuring and Monitoring: Must be able to accurately use measuring instruments such as micrometer, tachometer, dial indicator and caliper and monitors and interprets dry dock equipment and machinery gauges, meters and alarms in order to identify potential malfunctions as early to takes appropriate action to ensure continuous and reliable operation of equipment and systems.
- Shop and Hand Tools: Be very knowledgeable in the use of all common shop and hand tools.
- Dry Dock Preparation: Must be able to perform duties required to prepare the drydock for a docking evolution, to include the fabrication, preparation and assembly of the drydock blocks.
- Dry Docking Evolution Duties: Must be able to perform drydocking evolution duties such as diesel engine watch and operation of other equipment as necessary.
- Dry Dock Watch Duties: Must be able to perform drydock watch duties in accordance with the drydock operational procedures and instructions.
- Communication Skills: Must have good oral and written communication skills.
- PPE Knowledge: Must know what PPE to use and when.
This role requires extended periods of standing and walking (75%). Inspections and work may require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding and observing co-workers using tools and equipment. Lifting/carrying tools and parts weighing up to 50 lbs. on frequent basis. Standing, bending, sitting, reaching, pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, handling, finger dexterity, feeling, eye/hand/foot coordination, seeing, hearing required. Selecting appropriate tools for jobs, as per trade classification. Works in tight, confined workspaces on board ship and is exposed to varied temperatures, wind, wet and humid conditions, fumes, odors and dust, vibrations from ship and hand tools.
