Job Title: Director, Technical Operations

The Director, Technical Operations is a critical role within A.P. Moller - Maersk A/S, responsible for the management of Ship Superintendents and assigned fleet. This position reports to the Senior Director, Fleet Group Manager and is based at the Maersk Line, Limited office in Norfolk, VA in a hybrid work model.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the safety of life at sea, vessel, and cargo for the fleet.
  • Oversee the planning of fleet technical coordinated projects, including coordination of ballast water system installations and ensuring that any project-related work with impact on Ad Valorem is properly coordinated with the Ad Valorem team.
  • Liaise with the connected vessel team to manage any process-related changes for commercial vessels.
  • Play a critical role in the Emergency Response Organization as deputy to the Head of Crisis Management team, responding to any vessel casualty to ensure preservation of life and to the maximum extent vessel and cargo under crisis conditions.
  • Be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to respond to vessel casualties or other emergencies.
  • Supervise, coach, and mentor all technical staff assigned to the fleet of vessels.
  • Supervise all technical management activities for the fleet of assigned vessels.
  • Responsible for assigned fleet performance metrics, including budget, operating costs, reliability, and planning.
  • Responsible for regulatory compliance in assigned fleet, including Safety and Environmental Protection, Domestic and International Law, Regulation Policies, and Procedures.
  • Comply with US Department of Defense or other agency rules, regulations, policies, or requirements where applicable.
  • Responsible for planning and overseeing the execution by the ship superintendents of the fleet's regularly scheduled and unplanned dry dockings.
  • Responsible for monitoring and driving compliance of the technical team towards the Company's Safety Management System.
  • Supports commitment to safety and other selected company standards and certifications.
  • Perform other position-related duties as specified by management.
Position Specifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering required, advanced degree in Engineering or Business preferred (degree must be from an accredited institution).
  • 10 years' experience managing marine technical personnel.
  • 10 years' experience in vessel operations, repair, and maintenance.
  • 10 years' experience with flag state, port state, and class society requirements.
  • Prior supervisory experience required with demonstrated ability to lead and direct teams with differing backgrounds and skill sets.
Technical Skills and Competencies Required:
  • Ability to operate independently in remote locations.
  • Ability to travel extensively both domestically and internationally and to support assigned fleet.

Generally, the employee will be in an office setting, sitting at a computer terminal with short breaks and a lunch period. However, this position also requires ship visits and rides, which requires the ability to traverse ladders, gangways, and occasionally climb in tanks and cargo holds. There may be some bending/stooping, climbing, pulling, reaching above shoulder level, walking; standing; carrying of light items such as papers, books, or packages of up to 25 pounds. Should be able to hear & speak clearly using phone / headset to communicate with customers; be able to navigate, view & enter information on the computer.
