Job Title: Ship Superintendent

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Ship Superintendent to join our team at A.P. Moller - Maersk A/S. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day technical and operational issues related to assigned vessels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary point of contact with customers
  • Advocate for the company's safety culture and ensure timely attention to safety issues
  • Responsible for internal program coordination of operations and engineering to ensure contract compliance and customer satisfaction
  • Responsible for daily ship management of vessels under responsibility
  • Ensure timely and sufficient support to vessels on all operational and technical matters
  • Responsible for planning and executing maintenance of vessels' regulatory required equipment and respective documentation
  • Provide oversight for vessel Masters and Chief Engineers to ensure efficient and safe voyages
  • Recommend appointment of personnel for senior positions of Master and Chief Engineer
  • Supervise evaluation and screening of voyage repairs, service contracts, and selection of vendors
  • Actively assist in planning and execution of dry-docking, larger repairs, classification surveys, and regulatory surveys
  • Actively develop work specifications for voyage/emergency repairs and services from contractors
  • Coordinate with terminals, vendors, and other functions to service vessels with timely attention and efficiency
  • Routinely review vessel safety committee meetings and initiate follow-up
  • Support handling and closing out casualty and/or claims pertaining to P&I or Hull Machinery insurance matters
  • Act on special overtime requests with timely attention and completion in a cost-efficient and documented manner
  • Address Stevedore Damages and their close-out until the point of a claim case being prepared for invoicing
  • Participate in internal audit or vetting
  • Conduct performance appraisals for Masters and Chief Engineers serving onboard vessels under responsibility
  • Support company commitment to safety and other selected standards and certifications
  • Perform other position-related duties as specified by management

Requirements:

  • USCG License or equivalent international standard - Chief Engineer or experience 1st Engineer, Unlimited Tonnage, any oceans, or container RoRo vessel experience preferred
  • Three years shipyard or ship management experience or equivalency with commercial vessels
  • B.S. from an accredited institution, degree in marine transportation, marine engineering, or equivalent experience is required
  • Computer literacy Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Planned Maintenance System
  • Project management experience preferred
  • Vessel management experience with commercial vessels
  • Successful completion of DNV Superintendent certification preferred

Learning Description: In an effort to oversee performance as a Ship Superintendent and ensure individual is receiving proper guidance/support to work independently by mid-year, we have prepared the following key milestones to be accomplished by the end of first six months of employment:

  • Assist the Director of Technical operations in preparation and execution of a dry docking to gain knowledge of the end-to-end process
  • Conduct sailing technical vetting inspections on assigned vessels and follow up with manager to close out any findings
  • Conduct performance appraisals of the Top2 officers on assigned vessels by gathering feedback data from stakeholders and independent observations
  • Continue to learn and expand network within the larger Maersk Line operations support teams and commercial stakeholders

Travel Requirements: Extensive travel (including foreign travel and travel in cars, boats, ships, and airplanes) will be required to attend to shipyard maintenance, to ride vessels or visit vessels for quality assurance and general management of vessel and crews, and on short notice for casualties, to conduct investigations and to protect the company's reputation, as is required by the contract specifications, or as directed by management.
