Job Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking an accomplished and dedicated leader for the role of Director of the Animal Cancer Care and Research Center. This center is dedicated to providing comprehensive cancer treatment for veterinary patients while emphasizing innovative research in comparative oncology.
Vision: To integrate one-health cancer research and set the standard for exceptional care for pets and their families, accelerating advancements in cancer treatments for all.
The Animal Cancer Care and Research Center spans 19,000 square feet and features a variety of facilities including reception areas, examination rooms, offices, conference spaces, research laboratories, treatment rooms, and advanced surgical suites. The center is equipped with cutting-edge technology such as a stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) linear accelerator and digital imaging equipment to enhance patient care and research capabilities.
The Director will oversee all fiscal, administrative, and programmatic operations of the center, ensuring adherence to established policies and procedures. This individual will be an integral member of the college's Executive Board and will report directly to the Dean, while also collaborating with the Executive Director of the associated biomedical research institute. The Director will play a crucial role in fostering research partnerships and advancing the mission of both the college and the institute. Additionally, this position will be involved in fundraising initiatives to support clinical and translational research efforts. The Director will hold an academic appointment within the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, with responsibilities divided between administrative duties (approximately 70%) and clinical or research activities (approximately 30%).
As the chief medical officer of the center, the Director will lead a team of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and support staff, including residents and interns. The center will also host a diverse group of students engaged in various educational and research opportunities.

Required Qualifications

  • DVM or equivalent degree
  • Diplomate of an AVMA recognized specialty college
  • Proven track record and national recognition in oncologic education, service, and research
  • Prior administrative experience with strong communication and leadership skills
  • Evidence of collaborative interdisciplinary work
  • Commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion within an academic setting
  • Scholarly achievements that qualify for appointment at the rank of full professor

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degrees (MD, PhD)
  • Diplomate status in relevant veterinary specialty colleges
