In support of our mission to enhance the quality of life for South Carolinians by advocating for public health, SCDPH is seeking a Nutrition Program Specialist.

This role is perfect for individuals passionate about nutrition education and counseling, breastfeeding advocacy, and empowering families through community nutrition initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive nutrition evaluations to determine participant eligibility for the Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) Program, including thorough health history, dietary assessments, anthropometric measurements, and risk status evaluations.
  • Design personalized WIC food packages.
  • Document high-risk participant evaluations using SOAP Note format and provide tailored nutrition follow-ups for low-risk participants. Identify and refer high-risk participants to a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.
  • Create, implement, and assess nutrition education, training, and counseling for low-risk participants. Direct low-risk participants to online nutrition education resources.
  • Facilitate breastfeeding support and promotion for pregnant and breastfeeding participants. Screen all pregnant and breastfeeding participants and refer them to appropriate care levels. Distribute and monitor breastfeeding supplies.
  • Educate participants about formula options and provide support regarding WIC contract and List I special formulas.
  • Oversee WIC contract and special formulas as assigned. Refer participants on List II special formulas and metabolic formulas to the Registered Dietitian.
  • Actively engage as a member of a multidisciplinary WIC team in clinic/class scheduling, caseload management, and outreach efforts.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Minimum Requirements: A bachelor's degree in home economics, human ecology, dietetics, or a related field.

Agency Additional Requirements: A bachelor's degree in nutrition, food sciences, biology, public health, health education, or a related field, or an associate degree in applied science, child development, or a related field with at least two years of relevant nutrition experience in a clinical, public health, or institutional setting may be accepted upon HR approval. Relevant professional nutrition experience may substitute for educational requirements upon Human Resources' approval.

Must possess or be willing to acquire the specialized skills necessary for collecting screening information and anthropometric measurements.
