Position Overview

The United States Institute of Peace is in search of a Research Assistant (RA) to deliver research, writing, and administrative assistance to the Governance, Justice, and Security (GJS) team. The RA will engage in research, analysis, and events concerning Security Sector Governance and Reform (SSG/R), with a focus on areas such as Police Reform/Community Policing, Defense Sector Reform, Security Sector Assistance, Civilian Harm Mitigation, and other pertinent topics within the GJS team's SSG/R framework. Candidates should be organized, analytical, detail-oriented, possess excellent communication skills, and thrive in a collaborative environment. The Research Assistant will contribute to USIP's research, training, and outreach efforts related to security sector governance and reform, as well as broader challenges to stability, security, and effective governance through data collection, analysis, and curriculum development for USIP courses.

Compensation: Competitive hourly rate

Work Schedule: Approximately 20 hours per week; potential for up to 40 hours during breaks from academic commitments.

Work Location: This role is based at USIP's headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Security Governance Advisor and Senior Program Officers by providing research support through data collection and analysis in governance and security sector reform for various publications, including articles, reports, blogs, and podcasts, as well as participation in USIP events;
  • Compose research memos, case studies, literature reviews, and annotated bibliographies through independent desk research in governance and security sector reform.
  • Provide writing and communication support for the Security Governance Advisor and Senior Program Officer, including summaries, write-ups, and notetaking at relevant events for governance and SSG/R programs;
  • Aid in the development of curriculum and logistical preparations for USIP courses on Security Sector Governance and Reform;
  • Support the publication of USIP Special Reports, blogs, and op-eds, and assist with publication-related events as necessary;
  • Help plan and execute events to ensure the successful advancement of programmatic initiatives;
  • Perform additional research and minor administrative tasks as needed to facilitate the successful implementation of programmatic initiatives.

Other responsibilities may be assigned as required.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree is required; a Master's Degree in international relations, international security, governance, international peace and conflict resolution, or a related field is preferred.
  • Research experience in governance, security sector reform, or conflict prevention is essential.
  • Familiarity with issues surrounding security sector governance and reform; knowledge of Ukraine is advantageous.
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and collaborative skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical capabilities, with a proven track record of producing high-quality written materials, including research papers, briefing memoranda, articles, and blogs.
  • Ability to distill and synthesize complex themes, ideas, or data into clear and accessible summaries or memos.
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively within a team. Strong interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Must be a quick learner, well-organized, and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.

USIP's Research Assistant program is managed through the Consortium of Universities in the Washington Metropolitan area. Full-time university students in the Washington area are eligible for these openings.
