Position Overview:

The Surgical First Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the surgeon during surgical procedures, ensuring the operation is conducted safely and effectively for optimal patient outcomes.

This role involves practicing peri-operative care and requires a comprehensive understanding of the necessary skills, knowledge, and judgment to assist the surgeon through structured training and supervised experience.

The Surgical First Assistant operates under the direct oversight of the surgeon during the initial assisting phase of the peri-operative process. This position does not concurrently serve as a scrub technician.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Exhibits a deep understanding of the organization's mission, vision, and values.
  • Implements and updates practice standards to ensure respect for diverse cultures, age groups, and individuals with disabilities.
  • Enhances quality of care by integrating current research, recognized professional standards, and expert literature into service delivery.
  • Supports the hospital-wide Continuous Quality Improvement Process through the Plan/Do/Check/Act (PDCA) methodology.
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of Federal, State, and Local regulations, as well as CMS/JACH Accreditation standards.
  • Delivers both direct and indirect patient care in the perioperative environment through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation for patients across all age groups.
  • Collaborates with the surgeon and anesthesiologist to coordinate patient care, guiding the surgical technician and other staff while upholding professional standards.
  • Works alongside various departments to ensure seamless patient care and efficient workflow.
  • Ensures compliance with regulations, standards, and hospital policies, participating in Performance Improvement initiatives and team meetings.
  • Demonstrates awareness of emergency codes and preparedness procedures, understanding the role in response to each code.
  • Handles tissue management, provides surgical exposure, utilizes instruments, sutures, and ensures hemostasis as directed.
  • Displays knowledge of surgical techniques and aseptic practices.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures regarding infection control and universal precautions.
  • Assists in patient positioning, preparation, and draping.
  • Utilizes instruments effectively to provide exposure, suctioning, and sponging techniques.
  • Maintains a dry operative site through various methods as directed.
  • Demonstrates proper tissue handling and assists the surgeon in identifying structures that should not be ligated.
  • Exhibits suturing skills, ensuring proper closure of surgical sites.
  • Recognizes changes in patient condition and communicates effectively with the surgeon.
  • Exhibits manual dexterity and anticipates the surgeon's needs.
  • Performs effectively in high-pressure and emergency situations.
  • Assists with patient transfers on and off the operating table.
  • Functions harmoniously as a member of the surgical team.
  • Completes additional duties as required, such as assisting in the workroom or orienting new staff.
  • Conducts timely assessments, initiates interventions, and communicates with the surgical and anesthesia teams.
  • Evaluates and anticipates changes in patient conditions or surgical progress, managing emergencies as necessary.
  • Completes tasks in an organized manner, ensuring timely execution of orders and documentation.
  • Prioritizes workload effectively to facilitate smooth surgical operations.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor, demonstrating respect towards colleagues, patients, and families.
  • Shows willingness to assist others proactively.
  • Adheres to patient safety standards and infection control guidelines.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work environment.

  • Ensures all necessary documentation is completed prior to procedures.
  • Monitors the sterile field and instrumentation during use.
  • Checks medications for accuracy and labeling with the surgical team.
  • Handles surgical specimens appropriately.
  • Consistently performs 'time out' procedures per facility policy.
  • Independently identifies and completes necessary tasks without direct assignment.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess RN or Surgical Tech with First Assistant Certification.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in an acute care hospital setting.
  • Strong understanding of First Assistant roles and responsibilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • BLS and ACLS certification required upon hire and must be maintained.

  • Strong analytical and writing capabilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and database management.
  • Highly motivated and willing to take on additional responsibilities as needed.
  • Ability to manage stress and maintain efficiency amidst interruptions.
  • Flexible hours to accommodate call shifts and unexpected events.
  • Strong prioritization skills to meet deadlines.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials or infections may occur.
