The Surgical First Assistant plays a critical role in supporting the surgeon during surgical procedures, ensuring a safe and effective operation for optimal patient outcomes.

This role involves comprehensive peri-operative care, requiring a solid foundation of knowledge, skills, and judgment to assist the surgeon through structured training and supervised practice.

The Surgical First Assistant operates under the direct oversight of the surgeon throughout the initial assisting phase of the peri-operative process. It is important to note that this position does not serve concurrently as a scrub technician.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Exhibits a thorough understanding of the organization's mission, vision, and values.
  • Implements and revises practice standards to ensure respect for cultural, age-specific, and disability considerations.
  • Enhances quality of care by integrating current research, recognized professional standards, and expert literature into service delivery.
  • Contributes to the hospital-wide Continuous Quality Improvement Process utilizing the Plan/Do/Check/Act (PDCA) methodology.
  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of relevant Federal, State, and Local regulations, as well as CMS/JACH Accreditation standards.
  • Delivers both direct and indirect patient care in the perioperative environment through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation across all age groups.
  • Collaborates with the surgical team, including the surgeon and anesthesiologist, while guiding the surgical technician and other staff to uphold professional standards.
  • Works alongside various departments to ensure a seamless continuum of care and efficient patient flow.
  • Adheres to all regulations, standards, and hospital policies, participating in Performance Improvement initiatives and team meetings.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of emergency codes and preparedness procedures, understanding the role in response to each code.
  • Handles tissue management, provides surgical exposure, utilizes instruments, sutures, and maintains hemostasis as directed.
  • Exhibits proficiency in surgical procedures and aseptic techniques.
  • Fulfills all duties in accordance with established policies, including infection control and universal precautions.
  • Assists in the proper positioning, preparation, and draping of patients.
  • Utilizes appropriate instruments and techniques to provide surgical exposure and maintain a dry operative site.
  • Demonstrates skill in tissue handling and assists the surgeon in identifying critical structures.
  • Exhibits suturing capabilities, including vessel ligation and closure of surgical sites.
  • Recognizes and communicates changes in patient conditions to the surgeon.
  • Displays manual dexterity, anticipates the surgeon's needs, and maintains professional conduct.
  • Operates effectively in high-pressure and emergency situations.
  • Assists with patient transfers on and off the operating table.
  • Functions harmoniously as a member of the surgical team.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned, such as assisting in the workroom or orienting new staff.
  • Conducts timely assessments, initiates interventions, and communicates effectively with the surgical and anesthesia teams.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess RN or Surgical Tech with First Assistant Certification.
  • Minimum of three years' experience in an acute care hospital setting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of First Assistant roles and responsibilities.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required upon hire and must be maintained.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Exceptional analytical and writing capabilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and database management.
  • Highly motivated with a willingness to take on additional responsibilities.
  • Ability to manage stress and maintain efficiency amidst frequent interruptions.
