Position Overview

The Breast Imaging Ultrasound Specialist is proficient in executing a variety of ultrasound examinations, including specialized invasive techniques, ensuring high-quality diagnostic images for clinical evaluation. This role involves the careful positioning of both patients and equipment to achieve optimal imaging results. The specialist is also responsible for the management and transfer of images to the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Familiarity with departmental examination protocols.
  • Understanding of JCAHO and CMS State and Federal Regulations.
  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques in medical and surgical settings.
  • Engagement in Performance Improvement (PI) initiatives.
  • Awareness of hospital policies aimed at minimizing risks associated with wrong-site, wrong patient, and wrong procedure incidents.
  • Comprehension of Emergency Codes and appropriate response protocols.
  • Knowledge of the location and application of MSDS Manual, EOC Manual, and Infection Control Manual.

Qualifications:

  • ARDMS certification in at least one anatomical region; certification-eligible technologists must obtain ARDMS certification within one year of employment.
  • Preferred prior experience, particularly with invasive ultrasound techniques.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification.
  • Breast Ultrasound certification is advantageous.

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Selection of appropriate ultrasound equipment based on examination requirements.
  • Clear communication of the examination process to patients, guiding them into the correct position.
  • Assessment of patient discomfort during procedures, facilitating necessary physician intervention.
  • Adaptation of patient positioning techniques to accommodate individual physical and cognitive capabilities.
  • Utilization of optimal technical parameters to enhance image resolution, maintaining high standards for image quality.
  • Accurate completion of examination documentation.
  • Consistent work pace aligned with departmental standards, assisting radiologists by preparing necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Participation in maintaining a sterile environment during medical and surgical procedures, adhering to protocols for consent and Time Out processes.
  • Attention to the holistic needs of patients across all age groups.
  • Accurate transportation and positioning of patients for all ultrasound phases.
  • Ensuring patient comfort and privacy during examinations.
  • Adherence to on-call response times as per hospital policy, potentially utilizing a pager during standby periods.
  • Contribution to the PI Program through data collection and reporting of issues to supervisors.
  • Provision of patient care in a manner that prioritizes safety and minimizes the risk of medical errors.
  • Proper operation of all equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
  • Regular checks and documentation of equipment functionality.
  • Appropriate use of personal protective equipment.
  • Patient and family education regarding procedures performed.
  • Verification of patient identity prior to examinations using multiple methods.
  • Implementation of infection control measures through diligent hand hygiene and equipment disinfection.
  • Adherence to hospital policies aimed at preventing wrong-site, wrong patient, and wrong procedure occurrences.
  • Assistance to radiologists during procedures such as thoracentesis and fine needle aspirations.
  • Enhancement of communication effectiveness among healthcare providers.
  • Documentation of patient history and condition for radiologist review.
  • Communication of abnormal results to ensure accuracy.
  • Safe handling and operation of all imaging equipment.
  • Immediate reporting of equipment malfunctions following departmental protocols.
  • Participation in scheduled training and in-service programs, contributing ideas for improved safety and efficiency.
  • Adherence to standard and transmission-based precautions through consistent use of personal protective equipment.
  • Compliance with waste disposal procedures for both regular and biohazardous materials.
  • Application of proper body mechanics in all tasks, seeking assistance for heavy lifting or patient transfers.
  • Familiarity with hospital safety protocols and commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Knowledge of emergency preparedness procedures and active participation in emergency response protocols.
  • Maintenance of a clean and organized work area, reporting any hazards to supervisors.
  • Demonstration of sound safety practices to ensure a secure environment.
  • Compliance with all hospital safety and injury prevention policies.
  • Engagement in Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives to enhance job performance.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
  • Occasional bending, pulling, and pushing activities.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Frequent wrist movements required for equipment operation.
  • Exposure to potentially hazardous materials or infections.
