Role Overview:
The Attendance Support Specialist serves as the district's attendance officer, providing vital assistance to school personnel in understanding and applying compulsory attendance regulations while addressing issues related to truancy, excessive absences, and tardiness. This role acts as a key liaison among parents, law enforcement, and judicial representatives, ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, as well as district policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough investigations into cases of unexcused absences, ensuring adherence to compulsory attendance laws while maintaining confidentiality. This includes issuing warnings and filing complaints as necessary.
- Effectively communicate and clarify compulsory attendance laws and district policies to parents, students, and staff.
- Support the district during court proceedings related to student attendance issues.
- Facilitate referrals as needed.
- Collaborate closely with school administrators, law enforcement, and families to uphold district and state attendance policies, including conducting home visits and parent meetings regarding truancy.
- Provide parents with relevant information about available agency services.
- Compile and maintain comprehensive records, both physical and digital, of all cases investigated and required reports.
- Prepare and manage documentation for each assigned campus to assist in the development of behavior improvement plans and truancy prevention strategies.
- Assist campuses with residency verification processes.
- Monitor student leavers and drop-outs in collaboration with district campuses.
- Support campuses when parents request student escorts to ensure compliance with attendance requirements.
- Assist the Coordinator of Student Services with training and communication regarding truancy and attendance verification.
- Regular attendance at the work site is essential to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.
- Engage in professional development activities as mandated by the district.
- Adhere to established safety protocols while performing job functions and support district objectives.
- Uphold a professional code of ethics and undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.
A high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is required, along with two years of experience in compliance, law enforcement, or working with children or adults in a leadership capacity. Candidates should possess a solid understanding of state compulsory attendance laws, the ability to interpret relevant policies and procedures, and strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in using personal computers and familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet applications are essential. Effective communication skills in English, including listening, reading, writing, and comprehension, are necessary for daily interactions.
Mental and Physical Demands:
The role requires maintaining emotional control under stress, performing repetitive hand and wrist motions, and prolonged computer use. A valid Texas/New Mexico driver's license is necessary, and candidates must be insurable by the district's auto liability insurance. Compliance with the district's drug and alcohol screening policy is mandatory.
