Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Mental Health Technician Lead to join our team at Sun Behavioral. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will provide direct and indirect patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN). Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the personal care and comfort of psychiatric patients, creating a safe and healing environment for them to thrive.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clinical/Technical Skills (40% of performance review)
    • Provide on-the-job training for newly hired staff, ensuring a smooth transition and high-quality care.
    • Develop and deliver ongoing training programs for Mental Health Technicians, promoting professional growth and development.
    • Serve as a role model for all Mental Health Technicians, demonstrating exceptional leadership and clinical skills.
    • Orient patients to the unit, take admission vital signs, and record on the Nursing Assessment Form and/or Electronic Health Record (EHR).
    • Perform and record patient vital signs, intake, and output, notifying the RN of any changes or concerns.
    • Provide general nursing care, including transferring patients, assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), and meals.
    • Monitor patient compliance with pre- and post-procedure instructions, including Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) instructions, under the supervision of the RN.
    • Continuously observe patients' behavior, mental status, and activities, notifying the RN of any changes or unusual occurrences.
    • Identify behaviors that require intervention and take appropriate action to ensure patient safety.
    • Escort patients when leaving the unit for activities, visitation, meals, and scheduled tests.
    • Perform patient safety checks at scheduled times, documenting appropriately.
    • Responsible for one-on-one observation and constant visual observation for high-risk patients.
    • Assist with restraint (physical hold) of a patient, placing a patient in seclusion under the direction of the RN and utilizing Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) techniques and adherence to policy and procedure.
    • Assist with therapeutic educational groups under the direction of the RN or Director of Clinical Services.
    • Participate in treatment team meetings, communicating effectively and clearly to the Nurse Manager, RNs, therapists, and physicians.
    • Responsible for assisting patients needing additional care related to medical needs.
    • Demonstrate the ability to set limits for patients and utilize de-escalation techniques to promote a safe and respectful environment.
    • Ensure proper documentation in all position activities, following federal and state guidelines.
    • Perform 15-minute observation rounds and document appropriately.
    • Answer the telephone in a professional manner, directing calls appropriately and taking messages.
    • Operate equipment safely and correctly.
    • Identify safety needs and contraband identification.
    • Document and secure patient belongings.
    • Assist in the interviewing process for potential staff.
    • Contribute to the new hire and annual evaluation of Mental Health Technicians.
    • Participate as a CPI or CPR instructor.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications
    • Education
      • Required: High school diploma or GED. CPR and hospital-selected de-escalation technique certification.
      • Preferred: Bachelors degree in a behavioral health field, or in pursuit of a Masters degree in a behavioral health field.
      • Maintain education and development appropriate for position.
    • Experience
      • Required: 3 years of experience in a healthcare setting.
      • Preferred: 3 years of experience as a behavioral health technician.
