Overview:

Quinnipiac University is seeking a seasoned General Counsel to join its dynamic and energetic president and senior management team. The successful candidate will be a key member of the President's Management Committee, providing strategic legal guidance and support to the university's leadership.

The General Counsel will play a critical role in implementing Quinnipiac's ambitious strategic plan, ensuring compliance with federal and local laws governing non-profit institutions of higher learning, and providing expert advice on complex employment and labor issues.

The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of serving as a trusted adviser to a CEO/President and governing board, with expertise in managing complex legal issues, litigation, and legal risk assessment.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Representing Quinnipiac as its chief legal officer, serving as a senior advisor to the President, Board of Trustees, executive officers, faculty, and senior staff.
  • Providing comprehensive legal counsel, representation, and oversight on a wide range of legal matters affecting the university.
  • Protecting the university's institutional integrity, extending to best practices, potential liability, and matters that present substantial institutional risk.
  • Managing the operations and workload of the General Counsel office using advanced IT tools and systems.
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and rules enforced by U.S. federal, state, and local regulators and appropriate global regulators.
  • Leading a service-oriented office of legal affairs, coordinating and managing provision of legal services across the university.
  • Selecting and supervising outside legal counsel, including in transactions, contracting, litigation, and regulatory matters.
  • Serving as an ally in advancing innovative university ideas and practices, while addressing any legal concerns.
  • Overseeing the status of the university as a tax-exempt organization.

Education Requirements:

The successful candidate should hold a law degree, be a member in good standing of a state bar, and satisfy all applicable requirements for attorneys practicing law in Connecticut.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10+ years of relevant legal experience, with expertise in managing complex legal issues, litigation, and legal risk assessment. They will also have outstanding written and oral communication skills, effectiveness in working as a positive contributor to senior management teams, and experience managing a broad portfolio of legal issues.

The successful candidate will demonstrate legal talent, with the ability to focus on and counsel leadership on major issues. They will also have expertise in managing complex employment and labor issues, demonstrated sound judgment, and the ability to engage and manage outside counsel.
