About the Role

The Laboratory Technical Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring the quality of specimens for laboratory testing. This position requires a strong understanding of pre-analytical factors that can impact patient results. The successful candidate will operate various systems and methodologies to produce timely and accurate data for patients, quality control, and proficiency testing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Verify patient/donor identification and specimen/blood product labeling, including final verification.
  • Prepare and distribute specimens to departments according to specimen requirement and priority delivery.
  • Document instances where specimens do not meet acceptable criteria for result reporting.
  • Perform routine microbiology benchwork, including culture reading and molecular testing.
  • Assist with procedural questions and troubleshoot instruments as a technical lead during the evening shift.
  • Ensure proper quality control and maintenance procedures are performed and documented for the shift.
  • Train and assess the competency of testing personnel.
  • Verify new tests and conduct Beaker LIS testing, troubleshooting any issues.
  • Review daily results and perform monthly QC review.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university with courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics.
  • 3 years of experience in an accredited laboratory under the supervision of a pathologist certified by the American Board of Pathology.
  • Preferred experience: Previous experience performing, implementing, and troubleshooting culture and molecular (qualitative and quantitative) based infectious disease testing.
  • ASCP Certification consistent with the scope of responsibility (MLS/MT, MLT, HT, HTL, BB, C, H, M, CT) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) or Laboratory Technologist Certification (HEW).
