Assistant Animal Control Officer

Classification Purpose:
The main objective of the Assistant Animal Control Officer role is to uphold the regulations outlined in the Ohio Revised Code (ORC) Chapter 955 within the jurisdiction.

Key Responsibilities:
Enforce laws pertaining to the licensing, ownership, and management of animals. Conduct inquiries into citizen reports and investigate cases involving animal bites or scratches. Perform initial evaluations of sick or injured animals and, if necessary, transport them to the appropriate shelter. Capture and transport various animals, including dogs, cats, and wildlife, when there is a potential rabies exposure. Draft and issue violation notices and criminal complaints to pet owners for non-compliance with ORC Chapter 955. Document livestock loss incidents. Set and retrieve animal traps as required. Respond to service requests relayed through the radio dispatcher. Investigate claims regarding dogs designated as nuisances, dangerous, or vicious by gathering photographic evidence and witness testimonies.


Patrol designated areas to monitor for loose animals and other violations of ORC Chapter 955, while assisting law enforcement when necessary. Verify dog licenses and rabies tags for compliance. Facilitate the transfer of animals to other agencies as required. Engage with the community to foster awareness and understanding of animal control issues. Serve as a backup Radio Dispatcher when needed. Carry out additional animal shelter support tasks as assigned. Undertake community relations responsibilities as directed. Maintain consistent and reliable attendance.


These responsibilities are illustrative and may encompass some or all of these tasks or other job-related duties as assigned.


Essential Worker Characteristics:
Knowledge of safety protocols; public relations; agency policies and procedures; governmental structure and processes. Proficiency in operating equipment. Ability to apply principles to resolve practical, everyday challenges; identify issues, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; perform calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages; prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports; collect, organize, and classify information about data, individuals, or items; address complaints from the public or government officials; demonstrate the physical capability to lift up to 75 lbs.; exhibit dexterity in using hands and feet skillfully.

Minimum Qualifications for Employment:
Any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience, including but not limited to: High school diploma or GED with two (2) years of prior experience in animal handling.

Schedule: Late mid: 6pm - 2am with either Mon/Tues off or Tues/Wed off.

Additional Requirements:
Must maintain a valid Ohio driver's license.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
No supervisory duties required.

Unusual Working Conditions:
May be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing duties.

This position may require working:
holidays, weekends, overtime, and being on call as necessary.
