SUMMARY
This role is essential in supporting program personnel to foster a high-quality educational atmosphere where each child can reach their utmost potential in social skills and cognitive development, preparing them for primary education or other child care facilities. The position involves various instructional responsibilities within the classroom to assist the lead educator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the educator in planning and executing daily activities and programs for the classroom.

  • Establishes a positive rapport with the families of the children.
  • Assists in maintaining records and documentation.
  • Participates in training sessions provided for staff.
  • Supports the educator in adhering to daily lesson plans.
  • Helps implement the goals, objectives, and concepts outlined in the Head Start Performance Standards.

  • Takes charge of the class in the absence of the educator or assistant educator, aiding in the assessment of children.
    • Contributes to the writing of individual and anecdotal records.
    • Conducts daily health checks on children.
    • Performs additional tasks as assigned by the educator.
    • Ensures the safety of children by visually confirming their presence and marking attendance.

    • Supervises children in various settings including the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, and playground, assisting them as necessary.
    • Assists in data entry tasks for the educator.
    • Facilitates the transportation of children, either by operating the Head Start bus or serving as a monitor as required.


Secondary Responsibilities

  • Accompanies the educator on home visits when necessary.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Education and Early Childhood Development
Ensures that the educational environment is developmentally appropriate, recognizing that children develop at their own pace and have unique interests, temperaments, cultural backgrounds, and learning styles. Supports the social and emotional growth, cognitive development, language skills, and physical abilities of all children. Implements a curriculum that promotes individualized activities, integrates educational components across all program areas, fosters social relationships, enhances self-awareness, and develops cognitive skills. Involves parents in shaping the program's curriculum and educational approach, participating in staff-parent conferences and home visits, and providing opportunities for parents to observe their children and share insights with staff to inform learning experiences.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
A high school diploma or equivalent (GED), along with relevant experience or training, or a combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Capable of writing basic correspondence and effectively presenting information in one-on-one and small group settings.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense to follow instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form. Capable of addressing problems involving multiple concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Must pass an annual physical examination, TB screening, and random drug tests.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a Child Care Credential II, & I (EDU 119), or a CDA Credential, maintain a valid state-issued driver's license, and have current CPR and First Aid certification. Must obtain and maintain a CDL within 90 days of employment.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must demonstrate a working knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards, NC Day Care Regulations, and proficiency in operating a desktop computer and related office equipment.
