Transportation Support Specialist

SUMMARY
This role is essential in assisting program personnel to foster a nurturing educational atmosphere where each child can reach their fullest potential in social and intellectual development. The individual will engage in various instructional activities to support the lead educator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other responsibilities may be assigned.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the educator to plan and execute daily activities tailored for the classroom.
  • Builds a constructive relationship with the families of the children.
  • Maintains accurate records and documentation.
  • Participates in training sessions designed for staff development.
  • Assists in the implementation of daily lesson plans.
  • Supports the educator in achieving the goals and objectives outlined in the Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Takes charge of the classroom in the absence of the educator or assistant.
  • Contributes to the assessment of children's progress.
  • Helps in documenting individual and anecdotal records.
  • Conducts daily health checks for children.
  • Performs additional tasks as directed by the educator.
  • Ensures children's safety by verifying their presence and maintaining the bus roster.
  • Supervises children in various settings including classrooms, hallways, and playgrounds, providing assistance as necessary.
  • Assists with data entry tasks as required.
  • Facilitates the transportation of children, either by operating the Head Start bus or serving as a monitor as needed.


Secondary Responsibilities

  • Accompanies the educator on home visits when necessary.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Education and Early Childhood Development
This position ensures that the educational environment is suitable for the developmental and linguistic needs of children, acknowledging their unique growth rates, interests, and learning styles. The role supports the development of children's social, emotional, cognitive, and physical skills through a well-rounded curriculum that emphasizes individualized activities and integrates various educational aspects.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
A high school diploma or equivalent, along with relevant experience or training, is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and understand simple instructions and correspondence. Proficient in writing basic correspondence and effectively presenting information in small group settings.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations using whole numbers and fractions.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense to follow instructions and address problems in standardized situations.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Employees must pass an annual physical and TB screening, and comply with random drug testing requirements.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid state-issued driver's license and maintain certifications in CPR and First Aid. A Child Care Credential II, I (EDU 119), or CDA Credential is also required, along with obtaining a CDL within a specified timeframe.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Demonstrated knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards and NC Day Care Regulations is essential, along with proficiency in operating standard office equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands of this position require regular standing, walking, and the ability to lift and move items up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employees may be exposed to various weather conditions and moderate noise levels while performing their duties.
