Position: Assistant Teacher – Head Start

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week for 38 weeks annually

Compensation: Level 15 at $13.59 per hour

JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Teacher is responsible for creating a safe, nurturing, and supportive educational atmosphere. This role involves assisting the Lead Teacher in delivering engaging learning experiences and developmental activities for children. The Assistant Teacher will also step in for the Lead Teacher when necessary and oversee daily educational tasks in accordance with established guidelines and standards. The position emphasizes positive reinforcement to enhance the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth of children.

REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma or GED is mandatory. Candidates must enroll in a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential program to be completed within two years of employment. Proficiency in word processing and data entry is essential. Effective communication skills (both written and verbal), a passion for working with young children, and the ability to maintain confidentiality are crucial for success in this role. Certification in CPR and First Aid is required, along with the ability to take initiative, make independent decisions, and foster teamwork.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Lead Teacher in creating and maintaining a safe, healthy, and nurturing educational environment. Support and promote educational and social-emotional development that aligns with child outcome goals, recognizing each child's unique strengths.
  • Incorporate nutrition and self-care practices into classroom routines to help children develop healthy habits.
  • Establish positive relationships with families to encourage their involvement in their child's education.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with staff, supervisors, parents, and service providers.
  • Uphold confidentiality regarding all matters related to children, families, and staff in accordance with program standards.
  • Be prepared to travel to off-site locations for training as necessary.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The physical requirements outlined here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, see, talk, hear, and use hands for manipulation. Occasionally, the employee may need to reach with hands and arms, climb steps, stoop, bend, kneel, or crouch. The role requires supervising students, which may involve matching their walking speed and occasionally running to ensure their safety. The employee may need to lift up to 40 pounds and move students or equipment as necessary. The work is primarily conducted in a school setting, with occasional exposure to outdoor conditions. The noise level is typical of a school environment.
