Role: Assistant Teacher – Head Start

Annual Commitment: 40 hours per week for 38 weeks

JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Teacher is responsible for creating a safe, nurturing, and secure educational atmosphere. This role involves supporting the Lead Teacher in delivering engaging educational activities and child development programs. In the absence of the Lead Teacher, the Assistant Teacher will take charge of the daily educational operations of the classroom, adhering to established policies, state regulations, and performance standards. The position emphasizes positive guidance to foster the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional growth of children.

REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma or GED is mandatory. Candidates must enroll in a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential program to be completed within two years of employment. Proficiency in word processing and data entry is essential. Effective communication skills (both written and verbal), a passion for working with young children, and the ability to maintain confidentiality are critical for success in this role. Certification in CPR and First Aid is required, along with the capacity to take initiative, make independent decisions, and promote teamwork.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Lead Teacher in fostering a safe, healthy, and nurturing educational environment, promoting social-emotional and educational growth that aligns with child outcome goals.
  • Support the integration of nutrition and self-care practices into classroom routines to encourage healthy habits among children.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with families to enhance their involvement in their child's education.
  • Ensure ongoing communication with staff, supervisors, parents, and service providers.
  • Uphold confidentiality regarding all matters related to children, families, and staff in accordance with program standards.
  • Be prepared to travel to off-site locations for training as necessary.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The physical demands of this position require frequent standing, walking, sitting, seeing, talking, and hearing, as well as manual dexterity. Occasional reaching, climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, or crouching may be necessary. The role involves supervising students, which may require matching their walking speed and occasionally running to ensure their safety. The employee may need to lift up to 40 pounds and move students or equipment as needed. The work is primarily conducted in a school environment, with occasional exposure to outdoor conditions. The noise level is typical of a school setting.
