Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Planning and Architecture to join our team at Johns Hopkins University. As a key member of our Planning and Architecture unit, you will be responsible for overseeing and guiding the work of our architects and senior architects, ensuring that our campus development and capital planning initiatives are aligned with the university's strategic goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage a team of architects and senior architects to deliver high-quality planning and design services for campus development and capital projects.
  • Develop and implement planning and design strategies that align with the university's strategic goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the university to ensure that planning and design efforts are integrated with other initiatives and projects.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to architects and senior architects on planning and design matters.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external consultants and vendors to ensure that planning and design services are delivered efficiently and effectively.
  • Manage and oversee the development of planning and design documents, including feasibility studies, conceptual designs, and construction documents.
  • Ensure that planning and design efforts are aligned with the university's sustainability initiatives and goals.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure that planning and design efforts are consistent with the university's standards and guidelines.
Requirements
  • Professional degree in architecture (M.Arch or equivalent).
  • Professional architect license in the State of Maryland or a state with reciprocity.
  • At least 20 years of experience in architectural planning and design work, with a strong background in construction and renovation of various building types, mechanical and electrical systems, and construction delivery methods.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with experience in managing teams of architects and senior architects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with stakeholders across the university.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop and implement planning and design solutions.
  • Knowledge of building services and envelope technology, systems, control systems, sustainable practice, operating environments, and commissioning processes.
  • Knowledge of design and construction procurement models, including design/bid/build, construction management at risk (CMAR), design/build, and third-party developer project delivery.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in architecture (M.Arch or equivalent).
  • LEED Accredited Professional.
  • Strong architectural technology skill base, including proficiency in Google SketchUp, Photoshop, Bluebeam, and other graphics programs.
  • Experience managing teams of 4 or more individuals.
  • Ability to use MS Office, AutoCAD, and Revit.
