Job Title: Director of Planning and Architecture

Johns Hopkins University is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Planning and Architecture to join our team. As a key member of our Planning and Architecture department, you will be responsible for overseeing the planning and design of university facilities, ensuring that they meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the planning and design of university facilities, including buildings, landscapes, and infrastructure.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for planning and design, ensuring compliance with university standards and regulations.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and students, to understand their needs and preferences.
  • Manage and supervise a team of architects, planners, and designers, providing guidance and support to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Develop and manage budgets, timelines, and resources for planning and design projects.
  • Ensure that all planning and design activities are conducted in accordance with university policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external partners, including architects, engineers, and contractors.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies, applying this knowledge to improve planning and design processes.
Requirements:
  • Professional degree in architecture or a related field.
  • Professional architect license in the State of Maryland or a state with reciprocity.
  • At least 20 years of experience in architectural planning and design work, including experience with construction and renovation of a broad variety of building types, mechanical and electrical systems, and construction delivery methods.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with experience in supervising teams of architects, planners, and designers.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong commitment to collaboration and teamwork.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and creatively.
  • Knowledge of building services and envelope technology, systems, control systems, sustainable practice, operating environments, and commissioning processes.
  • Knowledge of design and construction procurement models, including design/bid/build, construction management at risk (CMAR), design/build, and third-party developer project delivery.
  • Knowledge of building interior systems and performance of finishes in commercial and institutional environments.
  • Knowledge of the furniture industry, including specification, sourcing, installation, and maintenance.
  • Ability to build comprehensive reports for data within spreadsheet and database systems.
  • Ability to produce accurate, timely delivery of complex materials.
