Rail Operations Technician

CHENEGA CORPORATION
The Rail Operations Technician, under the guidance of the Freight Rate Supervisor and the Rail Operations Supervisor, is responsible for executing braking and switching tasks as part of a train crew.
Key Responsibilities:
The train crew operates within designated installations and may travel to various locations as required. Key duties include:
- Communicating train movement signals using hand signals, lanterns, flags, and voice/radio.
- Mounting railroad cars to set brakes and secure wheels with blocks or chocks.
- Managing motor traffic at crossings to ensure safety.
- Coupling and uncoupling cars using standard coupling mechanisms.
- Aligning switches to maneuver rail cars and locomotives onto appropriate tracks.
- Verifying car numbers for specific movements and ensuring seals are intact.
- Operating handbrakes prior to detaching cars from locomotives.
- Assisting with emergency repairs on brake systems for locomotives and railcars.
- Adhering to safety protocols as outlined in the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR).
- Instructing and inspecting personnel on rail movement tiedown instructions.
- Conducting organizational maintenance on locomotives as directed.
- Performing preventive maintenance on track switches and grade crossings as necessary.
- Serving as an alternate Rough Terrain Container Handler (RTCH) operator when required.
Work hours may include nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Qualifications:
Applicants should possess:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- A valid driver's license, maintained continuously.
- Preferred experience of at least two (2) years in commercial railroad operations.
- Preferred experience of three (3) years in government rail crew roles.
- Preferred possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Preferred attendance and completion of military occupational specialty 88U.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Willingness to travel, including extended trips.
- Flexibility to work varied schedules, including nights and weekends.
- Ability to pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) for computer access.
- Capability to learn and apply relay signals for train movements.
- Ability to obtain a Forklift license through training.
- Competence in completing online inspections for commercial and military intermodal containers.
- Physical capability to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Basic understanding of railroad operations is preferred.
Physical Demands:
The physical requirements for this position include:
- Regularly sitting and communicating verbally.
- Occasional walking, standing, climbing, and lifting.
- Specific vision abilities required for close vision tasks.
