JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE:

SCHOOL GROUNDS SUPERVISOR

DEFINITION:

Under the general supervision of the site administrator, oversees students on school premises and/or in the cafeteria or lunch area, ensuring order and safety in accordance with established rules at each location.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises students on school grounds, during arrival, departure, or while waiting for transportation.
  • Maintains order and ensures safe practices in line with school regulations and sound judgment.


  • Collaborates with administration and custodial staff to identify unsafe conditions or faulty equipment on school grounds.
  • Utilizes unique skills or experiences to enhance recreational activities on the playground for all students.
  • Observes and communicates student behavior to certificated staff.
  • Supervises students during lunch periods in the cafeteria or designated eating areas, ensuring compliance with school rules and safety protocols.

  • Releases students from the cafeteria or lunch area according to established procedures.
  • Escorts students between different areas of the site as directed by the site administrator or other certificated staff.
  • Ensures students maintain cleanliness and organization in the cafeteria or lunch area.
  • Assists certificated staff in supervising, escorting, accounting for, and supporting students, as well as facilitating communication during emergencies.
  • Attends necessary meetings and participates in professional development sessions as required by the Superintendent or site administrators.
  • Regularly attends workshops and programs that promote student welfare and foster a positive school climate.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the site administrator or Superintendent, in compliance with legal requirements and district policies.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

ABILITY TO:

  • Build positive relationships with students, staff, and the community.
  • Understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Stand, walk, and move around the school grounds while supervising students.
  • Observe and monitor student activities both nearby and at a distance.
  • Learn and adhere to the practices, rules, and regulations of the District and the assigned school.

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding school-related information.
  • Foster cooperative relationships with individuals encountered during work.
  • Consistently demonstrate appropriate behavior that contributes to a positive school environment.
  • Obtain CPR Certification.
  • Basic First Aid knowledge.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Evidence of successful work experience, whether in a professional or volunteer capacity.
  • Experience working with children or in youth-oriented activities.

EDUCATION:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency in Spanish.
  • Training in conflict management.

STATUS OF THE POSITION:

  • School Grounds Supervisors who also hold another regular classified position will have their Yard Duty service counted towards their overall bargaining unit service.
  • School Grounds Supervisors working less than two hours are not included in the bargaining unit.

Requirements / Qualifications

A fingerprint clearance and First Aid/CPR training are required. Both are provided by the District.
