Compensation: $19.00/hour

Position Overview

The Youth Education Instructor will facilitate engaging and interactive plant science programs that may encompass field trips to the Arboretum, outreach experiences in classrooms, and summer day camps.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver exceptional educational programs that foster a connection between children and the natural environment.
  • Maintain positive and professional communication with parents, teachers, and volunteers.
  • Prepare and organize program materials, ensuring supplies are ready for upcoming sessions.
  • Ensure a safe, enjoyable, and enriching learning atmosphere for all participants.
  • Guide and oversee volunteers, delegating tasks as necessary.
  • Provide constructive feedback for program enhancement.
  • Engage in both leading educational activities and supporting fellow staff in program execution.
Work Schedule:

Commitment: On-call / as needed

Hours: Flexible schedule that varies seasonally and weekly.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, horticulture, natural sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in teaching within a classroom or informal educational setting.
  • Ability to convey information with enthusiasm, clarity, and adaptability.
  • Passion for working with children, demonstrating patience and a sense of humor.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Physical capability to walk, bend, and lift up to 20 pounds, working in both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Successful completion of a background check is required.
  • Valid driving record.

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum serves as a community outreach unit of the University of Minnesota's College of Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resource Sciences. Spanning 1,200 acres, it offers a diverse array of gardens, collections, natural areas, and educational programs for all ages.
