Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field, plus five (5) years of relevant experience, including two (2) years of experience in a leadership or supervisory role.
OR
  • Graduation with a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field, plus three (3) years of relevant experience, including two (2) years of experience in a leadership or supervisory role.
Licenses or Certifications:

Valid Driver Class C License.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, walk, and reach heights of up to six (6) feet.
  • Must be able to lift or pull book bags and equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must be able to push loaded book carts/trucks weighing up to three hundred (300) pounds.
  • Must have manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard.
Notes to Applicants
The Library Supervisor for Acquisitions & Collections is tasked with overseeing the centralized procurement and receipt of print materials for the library system. Key responsibilities include monitoring and assessing budget allocations for both print and digital resources, coordinating the workflow of material procurement, ensuring adherence to purchasing guidelines, and proposing actionable strategies to maintain a balanced library collection. Additionally, collaboration with the Cataloging team is essential to ensure proper labeling and distribution of resources.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate sound critical thinking and judgment in addressing complex issues, along with exceptional listening, problem-solving, and communication skills. The candidate should also possess the ability to work collaboratively with various library teams to enhance the customer experience for both internal and external stakeholders. A willingness to learn, assess, and adapt to the evolving needs of the organization and community is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional experience in collection management.
  • Experience in a leadership role performing duties such as:
    • Supervision
    • Training
    • Evaluations
    • Counseling
    • Disciplinary recommendations
  • Experience in a large urban library system.
  • Familiarity with library software applications like SirsiDynix-Symphony Workflows or similar robust systems.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations.
Duties, Functions, and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned:

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates both short- and long-term plans for library branches while staying informed on library trends.
  • Assists in budget development and grant applications, overseeing work-unit expenditures and cash handling.
  • Provides input for the creation of library policies and procedures.
  • Oversees programs, including outreach initiatives, based on community needs and strategic priorities.
  • Advises library staff on procedures and issues.
  • Delivers outreach services to the public, traveling to various locations and participating in library-wide committees.
  • Ensures a high level of customer service for all patrons.
  • Oversees the maintenance, security, and overall appearance of library facilities and equipment.
  • Coordinates resource sharing and services with other libraries and organizations.
  • Represents the City of Austin and the library to the public, interpreting and explaining policies.
Supervision and/or Leadership Exercised:
Responsible for a full range of supervisory activities, including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendations for dismissal.
