Job Overview

:The Reference Archivist I plays a crucial role in facilitating access to archival materials and providing assistance to patrons seeking information. This position is integral to the mission of the Texas State Archives, ensuring that users receive accurate and timely responses to their inquiries.

Key Responsibilities
- Conducts routine archival reference work, responding to requests for information and materials.
- Provides assistance to patrons in person, via telephone, or through written correspondence.
- Participates in the establishment of program goals and objectives relevant to archival services.
- Ensures compliance with reference room security protocols.
- Reviews records for information subject to disclosure exceptions and aids in the redaction of sensitive materials.
- Facilitates archival workshops and educational seminars for both staff and patrons.
- Prepares and updates inventories, indexes, and finding aids to enhance record accessibility.
- Engages in related duties as assigned, maintaining regular attendance in accordance with agency policies.

Additional Duties
- Contributes to special projects as needed.
- Assists in the development and preservation of collections.
- Aids in the creation of reports, manuals, and publications.
- Supports tours, orientations, and presentations regarding archival holdings.

Required Qualifications
- A Master’s degree from an accredited institution in history, government, library science, or a related field.
- Experience in providing archival reference support using original records or manuscript collections.
- At least one year of public service experience in a library or archival environment.
- Proficiency in word processing, database management, and spreadsheet software.
- Familiarity with state and local government records and standard research methodologies.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in genealogical research and utilizing government publications.
- Knowledge of the Texas Public Information Act and its application.
- Understanding of archival processing techniques and U.S. and Texas history.
- Ability to deliver presentations to diverse audiences.
- Familiarity with integrated library systems and coursework in archival administration.

Skills and Abilities
- Strong multitasking and prioritization skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Capacity to manage multiple reference inquiries in a high-pressure environment.
- Proficient in conducting detailed historical research.

Work Environment
- Standard office conditions with potential exposure to allergens.
- Primarily sedentary, with occasional physical activity required.
- Must be able to work extended hours and travel as necessary for training and meetings.

Reporting Structure
- This position reports to the Information Services Supervisor.
