Job Title: Learning Specialist

Job Summary:

The Learning Specialist plays a vital role in providing academic support and coaching to medical students, helping them achieve success in their studies. This position involves working with students in all four years of the medical school curriculum, developing and implementing academic success programs, and providing individualized or group instruction.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver educational counseling to students, focusing on critical-thinking skills, study skills, time management, note taking, and test taking skills to promote positive academic outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the medical education team to support curricular innovation and develop workshops on study habits, learning styles, and other relevant topics.
  • Oversee a tutoring program for first- and second-year students, evaluating existing programs and implementing new initiatives to enhance student learning.
  • Design and implement academic support plans for students struggling with knowledge or skills gaps.
  • Monitor student promotion and retention data, revising learning assistance programs and strategies to optimize outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain policy and procedure manuals for academic counseling activities, ensuring compliance with FERPA and Title IX requirements.
Requirements:
  • Proven success in providing academic counseling in areas such as study skills, learning challenges, test taking strategies, time management, and board exam planning.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in individual and group settings.
  • A professional demeanor, with a welcoming and customer-focused approach.
  • Experience in higher education academic counseling is preferred.
Education and Background:
  • A Master's Degree in education, with a preference for candidates with specific academic counseling experience and 2-3 years of previous experience in higher education and/or working with medical students.
Physical Requirements:
  • Physical dexterity to operate a keyboard, use office equipment, and access file cabinets.
  • Ability to speak and hear clearly, with sufficient volume to communicate effectively in normal conversational distance, over the phone, and in group settings.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer for extended periods.
  • Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments, and decisions.
