Position: Laboratory Operations Manager for Construction Materials

Role Summary:
The Laboratory Operations Manager is accountable for overseeing the functions of a construction or geotechnical materials testing facility. This role involves ensuring that all testing procedures are performed safely, adhering to the company's quality standards, project specifications, and timelines. The manager will also supervise the training and effective use of laboratory personnel, as well as the upkeep and organization of the laboratory and its equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement operational policies and procedures tailored to the laboratory to guarantee that testing services are delivered in line with the company's quality standards and efficiently.
  • Collaborate with management during the proposal and quotation processes for laboratory services to ensure accurate service scope, manpower availability, and competitive pricing.
  • Ensure that laboratory staff receive proper training, supervision, and necessary resources to maintain safety in both the office and laboratory environments.
  • Supervise laboratory operations to ensure timely execution of work in compliance with client and project requirements, as well as company policies and standards.
  • Ensure adherence to the company's Quality program and the Construction Materials Quality Management System (QMS) by all laboratory processes and personnel.
  • Assess employee performance within the laboratory and support their professional development in accordance with company policies.
  • Oversee the effective use of laboratory facilities and equipment, making requests for additional resources as necessary to meet client needs.
  • Manage the calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure the laboratory area is well-organized and maintained, including cleanliness and orderliness of equipment.
  • Assist the Materials and/or Geotechnical Department Manager in directing short-term business development initiatives to secure adequate funding for staffing levels.
  • Supervise administrative functions of the laboratory to ensure timely and accurate preparation of reports, proposals, and client communications.
  • Ensure compliance with company administrative policies by laboratory personnel, including time sheets and expense reports.
  • In collaboration with the Materials and/or Geotechnical Department Manager, plan, recruit, and train personnel within the department.
  • Support the preparation of the annual business plan for the department.
  • May perform laboratory testing related to construction and geotechnical projects as needed based on workload.
  • Understand project-related risks and be proactive in mitigating potential issues to protect the company.
  • Lead safety initiatives within the team, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and fostering a safe work environment.
  • Encourage ongoing quality monitoring and improvement across projects, engaging with project teams from the outset.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering technology or a related field, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in laboratory testing of construction and geotechnical materials; or, in lieu of a degree, at least 9 years of relevant experience.
  • Certification from recognized national, regional, or state authorities (such as ACI, NICET, DOT) or in-house certification in areas including concrete, aggregates, soil and rock, or road and paving materials is required.
  • A valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
