Position Overview

As a vital member of our healthcare team, you will be entrusted with the responsibility of supporting residents in managing their prescribed medications, as directed by licensed healthcare professionals and tailored to each resident's unique care plan. Your role may include providing medication reminders, assisting with self-administration, and administering medications in accordance with state and federal regulations, as well as company policies.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of assisted living regulations and procedures related to medication management.
  • Stay informed about current state and federal guidelines concerning medication practices, storage, and disposal.
  • Accurately interpret and follow medication orders and labels.
  • Ensure proper documentation on the Medication Administration Record (MAR) and make necessary adjustments as per physician directives.
  • Adhere to the Six Rights of Medication Administration to ensure resident safety.
  • Identify and address any concerns regarding medication orders or resident responses to medications.
  • Implement appropriate infection control measures during medication administration.
  • Ensure compliance with medication storage and disposal protocols.
  • Recognize potential side effects or adverse reactions and respond appropriately.
  • Understand which medications are restricted from being handled by unlicensed personnel.
  • Monitor and manage medication supplies to prevent any interruptions in resident care.
  • Facilitate timely procurement of newly prescribed medications.
  • Communicate effectively with healthcare providers and family members regarding medication-related issues.
  • Document all medication assistance and refusals in accordance with established policies.
  • Follow legal and professional standards for handling controlled substances.
  • Report any medication errors immediately and take necessary actions to ensure resident safety.
  • Document any changes in resident condition promptly.
  • Exercise sound judgment in seeking assistance from colleagues and supervisors when necessary.
  • Measure and record vital signs, including pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and blood glucose levels.
  • Document the effectiveness of administered medications in a timely manner.
  • Verify medication accountability through regular checks and counts.
  • Ensure effective communication between shifts and with other stakeholders regarding medication management.
  • Regularly inspect and maintain the medication storage area for safety and compliance.
  • Collaborate with direct care partners to support resident care.
  • Provide comprehensive shift reports to the incoming CMA.

Education and Experience Requirements

Some high school education is required.

Training and Certification

CPR certification and Medication Technician certification are mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. Previous experience in medication management and familiarity with long-term care or assisted living environments is advantageous.
