This role involves performing standard engineering field and design tasks for municipal projects and overseeing small to medium-scale initiatives.

Compensation Range: $58,639 - $79,163 DOQ
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4:30pm; Occasional evenings/weekends

This posting aims to create a pool of qualified candidates for future opportunities in our engineering department.

It is uncommon for a candidate to be offered a salary near the upper limit of the pay range. The specific salary offered will be evaluated based on various factors including skills, qualifications, experience, certifications, and internal equity.

Key Responsibilities: The tasks outlined below are not exhaustive but represent the types of duties the employee will likely be expected to perform regularly. The employee may be assigned different or additional responsibilities as the needs of the organization evolve.

  • Conducts initial planning and design services for various municipal projects, including but not limited to stormwater management, flood control, sanitary systems, and roadways under the supervision of senior engineers, including performing calculations and estimates.
  • Oversees construction and post-construction activities in collaboration with senior engineers.
  • Analyzes flood-prone areas and develops design plans for drainage solutions.
  • Reviews and provides feedback on private development plans to ensure compliance with state and local regulations.
  • Locates municipal utilities for necessary inquiries.
  • May engage in survey work, including but not limited to topographic surveys, construction staking, and as-built documentation while acting as a crew leader.
  • Conducts acceptance testing and inspections of sanitary and stormwater systems.
  • Collaborates with engineering technicians and surveyors to execute engineering tasks related to the design and construction of public infrastructure.
  • Prepares and maintains essential records and reports, including assisting in the preparation of the municipal stormwater permit.
  • Supervises the construction of municipal infrastructure projects, including new and reconstructed streets and new or rehabilitated underground utilities, performed under city contracts or private development.
  • Designs and drafts municipal projects using AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or assists engineering technicians with drafting as necessary.

Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Civil Engineering, along with an Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT) from the State of Wisconsin, or the ability to obtain one within one year, plus 1-2 years of relevant engineering experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

Knowledge of:

  • Modern practices, methods, and techniques applicable to civil engineering work in a municipal context.
  • Office and field operations related to the preparation of plans, charts, reports, and construction of engineering projects.
  • Construction and maintenance laws, codes, departmental rules, regulations, and policies.
  • The use of standard office equipment, including computers and relevant software applications.
  • Occupational hazards and the techniques used to mitigate risks.
Ability to:
  • Comprehend and follow instructions while managing projects with defined objectives.
  • Utilize engineering field, office, and laboratory testing equipment.
  • Oversee and guide the work of engineering interns, technicians, and assistants.
  • Employ computer design software, drafting tools, and surveying equipment.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks under varying weather conditions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, department heads, colleagues, and the public.
Skills in:
  • Oral and written communication.
  • Applying modern civil engineering techniques and methods to resolve operational challenges.
  • Preparing clear, comprehensive, and concise technical reports and evaluations of engineering issues.
  • Utilizing specialized equipment and technology.
Special Requirements:
  • Engineer in Training Certificate;
  • Valid driver's license.
